Ida Hicke passed away peacefully on February 26, 2022 at Glengarda Hospice in Saskatoon. She was 99 years old. Ida was born September 8, 1922 in Grayson, Saskatchewan. She was the youngest of 8 children born to John and Teresa Duczek. After completing high school, which included a year boarding at the Vibank, SK Convent with the Ursuline Sisters, she attended Normal School in Regina and became a teacher. She taught at Gelowitz School near Killaly. It was a one room schoolhouse in the middle of the prairie. She is remembered fondly by her many students. She married Ewald Hicke on July 11, 1944, and they farmed for 24 years on Ewald’s grandfather’s original homestead close to Killaly. Those were busy years raising 5 children, working hard on the farm, and being actively involved with church and community. In 1968, they purchased the Biggar Hotel and enjoyed their four years there. They then moved to Saskatoon where Mom worked at Sherbrooke Nursing Home as a care aid for a number of years. They kept busy during their retirement. They enjoyed travelling to Mesa, Las Vegas, and Hawaii, among other destinations. They always had an RV and spent many enjoyable summers fishing and camping. They loved a good card game and visit. They had a wide circle of friends and relatives that they kept in close contact with over the years. Ida was a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother. She and Ewald were always there for everyone and eager to help out with whatever was needed. Ida was predeceased by Ewald on September 29, 2008. She is survived by son, Brian Hicke (Helen) of Melville and grandchildren, Jillian (Steve), Kenton (Sherry), Daniel (Melissa) and Cameron; son, Marvin Hicke (Wanda) of Bolton, ON and grandchildren, Lisa (Iain) and Vanessa (Duane); daughter, Mavis Gillen (Frank) of Dodsland, and grandchildren, Tennille (Eldon), Noel and Courtney; daughter, Maxine Bevan (Dave) of Saskatoon; daughter, Candace Forrester (Stewart) of Saskatoon and grandchildren, Jessica (Tyler), Brett (Kylie), Cole, Kathryn (Brandon) and Leanne (Matt). Ida also enjoyed her 13 wonderful great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Hack of Melville and brother-in-law, Del Hicke (Zonia) of Markham, ON. Ida was laid to rest beside her husband, Ewald, after a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Spirit Parish on March 5, 2022.
