His school years included Boy Scouts, cross country running, playing the cornet in the band and orchestra and membership in the National Honors Society. He became an Eagle Scout at the young age of 12. Roger was a lifelong avid follower of Chicago sports teams.
Roger received his B.S. and B.A. in business in 1954 as well as his MBA from Northwestern University in 1959. While at Northwestern, Roger was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, participated in intramural sports, the Waa-Mu Show, and the ROTC program.
Upon graduation Roger joined the US Navy LTJC and became a supply officer. In 1956 Roger was an Ensign aboard a Navy ship in the Pacific involved in the nuclear bomb tests at Bikini and Enewetak Atolls, Marshall Islands; called Operation Redwing.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Roger joined Allstate in Northbrook, Illinois, as senior director of international reinsurance. After retiring from Allstate, Roger became a Certified Financial Planner for Financial Network Investment Corporation.
Roger and his wife Linelle lived in Lake Barrington, Illinois. Roger semi-retired in 2008 and they moved to Fearrington Village, North Carolina, and then fully retired in 2016 when they moved to Sarasota, Florida. They shared their passion for the arts, traveling and playing tennis.
A few of Roger’s community interests included Chicago JC’s, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Eureka College Trustee, Co-Chair of Adolescent Brain Cancer Research Chair for Children’s Memorial Hospital, Lyric Opera of Chicago, USO at Great Lakes and singing in sacred and secular chorus.
Roger’s greatest love was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife Linelle, three sons from a previous marriage: Cam (Mary), Brad (Marlene), and Brian (Donna), seven grandchildren: Kellen, Bradley, Lacey, Claire (Taylor) Wilson, Brenna, Grace and Brian, Sister Debby (Roy) Johnson and his nieces and nephews. Roger was an aficionado when it came to popcorn which he happily shared with his family and friends.
Roger was predeceased by his daughter Cheryl Linda Dickinson, father Roger Fielding Dickinson, mother Maurine Fisher Dickinson and sister Rogerta Julien Slauf.
A memorial service will be held at Church of the Palms on Saturday, December 14, at 3:00 PM. The service will be live-streamed. A private service will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
