Joette Garnto, 91, a resident of Sarasota, passed away peacefully in her home on November 15, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Jackson County, FL, May 26, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Lowell and Gladys Wiley. Joette was raised in Auburndale, FL and moved to Sarasota in 1959. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her family.
As Manager of the Job Service of Florida in Bradenton, she retired after 34 years. With a love of flower gardening, she had a special interest in orchids. After retirement, she spent twelve years working in numerous National Parks. Her favorites were Yellowstone National Park and Denali National Park. She loved playing cards and board games and was a passionate reader.
She is survived by her sons, Joel Long, Gary (Carol) Long, Jeff (Ann) Garnto, and grandchildren Justin (Sarah), Jessica (Stephen), Michael, Dana, Andrew and Dylan. And also, five great-grandchildren, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her two sisters, Kathryn Spickard and Sarah Anthony.
The family wishes to profusely thank Joette’s caregivers and Tidewell Hospice, who provided professional, kind and loving care over the last few months.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association.
