Retired Justice Franklin Morton Jr. Passes Away Franklin W. Morton Jr. passed away peacefully in Sarasota, Florida on October 28th. He was born May 17, 1920 in Brooklyn to the late Franklin and Inez Morton. He attended Temple Law School and left to serve in the United States Army during World War II. After military service, he completed Law School at St. Johns University. Following graduation in 1948 he was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York. The following year he was appointed as Assistant U.S. States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. He moved to a similar position in Kings County, New York in July 1951, and served there until being appointed to the Municipal Court in 1958. He also served in both Surogate and Family Court before being elected to Supreme Court in 1969 for the first of two terms. He received many awards over the years for his work as a Judge and for his philanthropic work in the community. He held numerous positions with the Veterans of Foreign wars to include Commander and National Judge Advocate (he was also the first African-American to hold a national office with the Veterans of Foreign Wars). He served on the Board of The society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and as a Trustee on the Board of Brooklyn Caledonian Hospital for many years. Judge Morton also volunteered his time at Boys Welcome Hall, Brooklyn Psychiatric Center, The American Red Cross, the Y.M.C.A Trade School and both the L.I.U and St. Johns Alumni Associations. Franklin was a devoted friend, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife Gwendolyn(formerly Irish), and daughter, Sherill. He leaves to mourn a son (Franklin III), two daughters (Rebecca and Catharine), four grandchildren (Kyle, Ian, Asia and Gwyneth), and two sons-in-law (Milton and Charly). A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on December 13, 2014 at St Wilfred’s Episcopal Church 3773 Wilkinson Rd, Sarasota, Fl.
