Clara Ann grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and attended high school at Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, North Carolina. As well, she graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and this is where she met her husband of 64 years. In addition, Clara Ann held graduate degrees from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY and Brooklyn, NY (CUNY). Clara Ann enjoyed rocking babies at Children First, mentoring youngsters, singing with various choirs and working with a host of community activities. Moreover, Clara Ann had a joy for teaching her students to read. She was a Reading Specialist in the Hempstead Public Schools for over 30 years.
Clara Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Ann Reba Twigg of Memphis, Tennessee and her brother, Dr. Lewis Twigg, Jr. of Flint, Michigan. She is survived by her husband, Dr. George L. Mims of Sarasota, Florida; daughters Cheryl Ann Mims-Grier of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Carla Aletha Mims of Sarasota, Florida; and son-in-law, James Grier of Fayetteville, Georgia.
Clara Ann was active in her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, The Links, and The Society. In lieu of flowers, her family ask that contributions and donations are made to scholarships or educational committees of the organizations in which she held memberships.
A visitation for Clara will be held Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232. A funeral service will occur Friday, December 15, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Church of the Redeemer Episcopal, 222 S Palm Ave, Sarasota, FL 34236. A committal service will occur Monday, December 18, 2023 at 10:30 AM at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
