Barry Lee Carey MD

A visitation for Barry will be held Monday, April 12, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232. A Funeral Mass will occur Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Saint Martha Catholic Church, 200 N Orange Ave, Sarasota, FL 34236.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 41 years, Cynthia J Carey; children Julie Ionta (Tracy) of New Castle, PA, Jeremiah Carey (Francesca) of Orlando, FL and Whitney Mariah Vichiett (Murilo) of New Castle, PA; Mother-in-law Jean Harris of Barberton, OH; grandchildren James and Elena Carey; sisters Wanda Hasty (Paris), Gail Walker (Dennis), Lisa Martin; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by parents Mary Francis Sellers and Warner Burt Carey and father-in law Donald K Harris. He is also survived by sister- in-law Christina Halchak, brothers-in law Timothy Harris and Donald E Harris (Judy) of Barberton, OH.

Barry L Carey was born September 28, 1958 in Atlanta, GA. Upon graduation from South Fulton High School in College Park, Georgia, he attended Apostolic Bible Institute where he met the love of his life. He graduated in the summer of 1979 with a Bachelor of Theology degree, and he and Cynthia were married on October 20, 1979. He served as a pastor in various churches in Wisconsin, Georgia, Ohio and Pennsylvania, where he impacted many lives. In addition to serving and shepherding his congregants and whomever was in need, he was always there for his children. He was a loving father and encouraged his children in their academics and hobbies, coaching and tutoring and showing up for their many activities.

In his late 30s, Barry decided to make a career change, and to serve people in another capacity, as a physician. He completed pre-medical studies at Wilkes University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in 1997. He attended Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA and graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine in 2000. He did his Emergency Medicine Residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, FL from 2000-2003, followed by 8 years as an Emergency Physician at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, FL. During this time, he participated in a Medical Missionary trip to Honduras, taught classes on art and theology, and taught as an Adjunct Professor at Warner University. Barry loved reading, learning and writing and furthered his studies at Biola University in La Mirada, CA. He received a Master of Arts in Theology from Biola University in 2010. Starting in 2015, he was an attending Emergency Physician with Locum Tenens at various hospitals in Florida, Maine and Wisconsin. Most recently, he was an Emergency Physician with Marshfield Clinic in Neillsville, Wisconsin.

Dr. Carey was a man of faith and he earnestly followed God throughout his life. His life long journey of seeking truth led him to join the Catholic Church on Easter of 2018. He was an avid Atlanta Braves and University of Georgia Bulldogs fan. He was a lifelong learner, and followed his many passions with enthusiasm. He was a voracious reader, writer, philosopher and theologian, singer, musician, sailor, athlete, art lover, handyman, craftsman, scuba diver, chef, world traveler and adventurer. He sponsored numerous children for over 15 years through Compassion International. He studied the works of CS Lewis through the CS Lewis Institute at Oxford University and Cambridge.

He was the captain of SV Beatitude and SV Saint Brendan, where he and Cynthia lived aboard and traveled with the motto “Traveling this orb with a sense of awe and wonder which is grounded in the reality of a world full of meaning, beauty, and goodness.” They sailed the Intracoastal Waterway of the Eastern United States, circumnavigated the Caribbean Islands and sailed to Columbia and Panama. He was crew on a sailboat for a 3,000 mile 19-day passage across the Pacific to the South Pacific isle of Hiva Oa. He and his wife have traveled to all 50 states. They traveled by RV across the United States to many National Parks, hiking, camping and enjoying God’s natural beauty. His travels also included all across Europe, the Middle East and Russia.

In death, he continued saving and serving others as an organ donor. He will be missed tremendously by many, but his legacy of love and living life to the fullest will live on in our hearts. What an amazing man of God heaven has gained. Cynthia will be establishing a scholarship fund in his name to continue his legacy of giving and learning in the near future.
