Barbara Ashkenas Mitchell

2024, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

She was born on July 15th 1943, the daughter of late David Ashkenas and Lena Shuster in the Bronx, New York . After spending her younger years in the busy city she moved to Miami Beach at age 14. She attended and graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. She later attended University of Florida where she received a Bachelor's degree in education. At the university is where she met her sweetheart Gary Mitchell.

Gary and Barbara got married and continued their lives in Sarasota, Florida. Barbara had a long career of 38 years teaching at Gocio Elementary. In her free time she enjoyed showing and raising dachshunds with her family. Her family includes two daughters Marcia Brown and Kimberly Alibro, four grandchildren Lane, Anthony, Rachel, and Gianni, and two siblings Paul and Linda.

Barbara enjoyed retired life with her late husband Gary spending time traveling to different locations around the world. A frequent place they traveled was Boluxi, Mississippi to seek the thrill of gambling. After Gary’s passing she continued to live life to the fullest by spending time with friends and family.

Her celebration of life will occur on Saturday, January 20, 2024, visitation for Barbara will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM , with committal service at 3:00 PM at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232.
