Matthew Franklin Sowell, known affectionately by his coworkers as "Smiley," passed away on August 23, 2023, in Satsuma, Alabama, on his 36th birthday. Born on August 23, 1987, in Mobile, Alabama, he was a beloved son, brother, and friend. Matthew's journey came to an end due to complications arising from type 1 diabetes.
Matthew's generosity and hardworking nature were the cornerstones of his character. He was a skilled tradesman, specializing in welding, and his dedication to his craft was evident to all who knew him. His commitment to excellence in his work earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
Matthew is survived by his mother, Linda Chestang Sowell; sister, Robin Sowell; brother, Jacob Sowell; and a wide circle of family members and friends who loved him deeply. He was predeceased by his father, Van Sowell, and his brother, Van Sowell, Jr.
All who knew Matthew understood his love and passion for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman with multiple tournament entries and awards. He was a passionate hunter for deer, hogs, and anything he could grill, smoke, or fry. Visitation for Matthew will be held at Radney Funeral Home – Saraland on Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. A memorial service to celebrate Matthew's life will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Radney’s Funeral Home in Saraland, Alabama. Interment will follow at Creola Cemetery, Creola, AL.
