Gregory Lynn Mercer, “Big Daddy”, 55, of Satsuma, Alabama passed peacefully January 14, 2023, after a 12-year battle with thymoma cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends. He was born to Thelma Gail and Lemuel Mercer in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Greg grew up in Sneads, Florida, graduating in 1985 from Sneads High School. He received a scholarship to play football at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. After moving to Mobile, Alabama, Greg met the love of his life, Tania. They were married in 1999 and raised two boys, Dakota and Drake, in Satsuma Alabama. Greg was actively involved, coaching and mentoring in Saraland youth football and baseball.
To know “Big Daddy” was to love him. He never met a stranger and his genuine personality impacted everyone that knew him, young and old. Greg was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed. Among his greatest enjoyments were watching sports, camping, cooking with friends, hunting and boating with friends.
Greg is survived by his wife, Tania Mercer, sons Dakota Ray Mercer, Drake Tristan Mercer, Sister-in-law Terra (Scot) Sealy of Saraland, Alabama, nephew Peyton Thrasher, and niece Lauren (Michael) Druhan.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. with memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, Alabama.
