July 27, 1949 - October 6, 2024 (75 years)
Celso Romin Mejia entered into the Peace of Christ on October 6, 2024, at Vancouver, Washington. The son of the late Florencio and Maria Mejia, Cel was a native of Ramos, Tarlac in the Philippines. Cel graduated in 1967 from Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo High School in Quezon City, Philippines. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1971, attending San Beda University and Lyceum of the Philippines University in Manila. Cel emigrated to the United States in 1972 and on January 2, 1974, he returned to the Philippines to marry the love of his life, Angelita. Together they went to the United States and settled in Milpitas, California. In America, Cel lived mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area (Milpitas, Fremont) and also lived in Rohnert Park, CA; Corvallis, OR; and recently Vancouver, WA.
Cel’s first job in America was at McDonald’s where he worked for two weeks before starting his career at Hewlett-Packard. There he was a machine operator in plastic molding, a scheduler, a planner, a buyer, a supervisor and a manager. In 2003, he retired from Hewlett-Packard after 30 years.
During his teen years, Cel founded a youth group of idealists called the “Druggy Proper Lions Club.” Fond of wordplay, “Druggy” was in reference to medication (drugs), as a curing agent. “Proper” was to connote maturity and sophistication. “Lions Club” symbolized community involvement. In short, the whole name meant that the youth is the hope of the community. Those early roots as a leader and organizer continued throughout his life, starting community organizations wherever he lived, and founding a reunion group for his high school class that was grounded in philanthropy, charity, and creating opportunities for young scholars in the Philippines.
Cel had no shortage of interests and hobbies. In his younger years, he composed music (with a particular love for percussion), trained in Aikido, coached basketball, and created pencil art. He loved to build things from tri-level decks to elaborate home art. He was a devoted fan of the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers. Later in life, he grew an affinity for cooking, fell in love with fishing, traveling the world, and was an avid cheerleader for his grandchildren.
Cel was preceded in death by parents Florencio and Maria Mejia, brothers Flor, William, infant Junior, and sister Caridad. Survived by Angelita Niedo Mejia, his wife of 50 years; son Agham-Silangan Mejia, son Cosmo-Guines “Geno” Mejia (Vangie); daughter Diwa-Morena Agustin (Melvin); grandchildren Melody Agustin, Elea Heart Mejia, Oasis Mejia; and his two loyal Grand Pets, Coco Chanel and Mochi.
