Shirley Ann (Young) Schulz July 12, 1937 - June 25, 2024 Shirley Ann (Young) Schulz of Villa Park, California, passed away on June 25, 2024, at the age of 86. Shirley leaves an indelible impression on those who called her Mom, Grandma (Nana), Great Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Friend, Teacher, Mentor and Great Woman of God. Shirley’s brilliant spirit, radiant smile and compassionate heart captivated everyone who had the chance to know her.
Shirley was born on July 12, 1937, to Ralph and Louise Young in Heads Harbour, Newfoundland. Shirley’s family migrated to the United States where they finally settled in San Diego, California, where she attended Jefferson Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High and San Diego High School. Roosevelt Junior High was right next to the San Diego Zoo, where she would see the camels over the fence from their sports field.
At age 17 (1954), Shirley attended Pasadena Nazarene College in Pasadena, California, with a minor in Psychology and a major in Music. While there, Shirley met her future husband, Gordon Richard Schulz. After finishing her second year of college, they were married on June 2, 1956. In the spring of 1959, while pregnant with her first son, Geoffrey Gordon Schulz, she performed her final piano recital to complete her music degree. Geoffrey was born on May 1, 1959 in Pasadena, California. Two years later, she gave birth to her second son, Craig Richard Schulz, born on April 26, 1961, in Glendale, California. By 1962, Shirley returned to Pasadena Nazarene College to continue her education. In 1965, Shirley graduated with a Master’s degree in Education.
In 1966, Shirley began her first teaching job at Village Christian School in Sun Valley, California. She taught grade 3 for many years. In 1968, her husband co-founded an aerospace company, Odetics, Inc. In 1972, the family moved to Villa Park, California, so Gordon could be closer to his company. Shirley became a substitute teacher for the Orange Unified School District and continued to teach throughout the 1970’s. In the 1980’s, she became a Released Time Christian Education teacher, teaching chapel to Orange Unified students. She also taught piano lessons and continued to teach piano through March of this year.
At the center of Shirley’s life was deep faith in God, one that she not only espoused through perfectly timed words of encouragement or scripture, but through living a Godly life that blessed all who encountered her. As a child, Shirley gave her life to Christ in the Church of the Nazarene, where she worshiped and served until the end. After moving to Villa Park, she became a member of the Anaheim First Church of the Nazarene where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Pianist and Organist for 52 years.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Young, mother, Louise (Watkins) Young, sister, Edith (Young) Spelsberg, and brother, Floyd Young. Survivors include her sons, Geoffrey Schulz and Colleen of Orange, California, and Craig Schulz and Kim of Calimesa, California, her grandchildren, Kirsten (Schulz) Ruelas and Agustin, and Zane Schulz and Jayden, her great grandchildren, Abby Ruelas and Agustin Ruelas, nieces, nephews, and many family and friends.
Shirley’s passing has left an enormous hole in the lives of those who loved her, yet her legacy of love, service, and faith will carry on in the many lives she touched. She is in the arms of Jesus now, and is receiving her Heavenly reward.
