Two years after his graduation from Elgin, IL High School in 1957, Chuck was married to Marjorie Sagadencky in 1959, and they had two children, David and Robin.
Chuck pursued higher education in the electronics field, graduating from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL in 1966, having completed coursework in Missionary Technology and Advanced Radio Training. He was employed as a radio engineer in the Denver Police Department for 31 years, during which time he served in the Naval Air Reserves.
After the death of his wife Marjorie in 2000, Chuck worked as a volunteer with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Papua New Guinea, serving in the Computer & Technical Services department. During this time, he met Carol Gutwein and the two of them were married in 2003. They initially served together as missionaries in PNG before returning stateside. In 2008, they moved into their current home in DeBary, FL.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ruth Kaptain; three sisters, Marcia, Judy and Mary; and one brother, Bob. He is survived by his wife, Carol (Gutwein) Kaptain; his children, David (Holly) Kaptain and Robin (Jack) Givens; his grandchildren, Alex, Elea (Yannick), William, Cayden, Katie, and Allison; and, one sister, Lynda (Paul) Soteriades.
Chuck’s life was exemplified by a love for the Lord and His Word. His peace of heart was evident through a quiet contentment; his joy of life was reflected through an infectious smile. He was absolutely captivated by nature. A walk with him through a park or around the neighborhood was much more about enjoying God’s creation (the clouds, sandhill cranes, budding trees, the moon and stars) than getting exercise. One of his favorite pastimes was singing along with gospel music videos with beautiful nature scenes as a backdrop. Chuck also had a penchant for inventing and repairing sundry items. At any given time, he had a long list of projects awaiting his attention. Numerous friends benefited by his sharp engineer’s mind and his ever-willing spirit to be of help.
Chuck will be greatly missed by family and friends he leaves behind. And yet there is deep comfort and hope in knowing he is “walking the streets of gold,” which he anticipated with great joy throughout the years.
