Sanford Mitchell Dunklin, 61, of Atlanta, passed away surrounded by her family, October 23, 2021, following complications from surgery the week prior. Sanford was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her. Sanford’s life was a testament to her love of God, family, and friends. The family is comforted knowing she is now in the arms of her Savior, and was a faithful servant to the end. Sanford’s sweet demeanor, infectious laugh, and loyal spirit brought joy to the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
Sanford was born and raised in Atlanta, GA, the youngest daughter of IS and Betty Mitchell. She was a graduate of The Lovett School and Sewanee. Prior to matriculating at Sewanee she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, but never let her battle with that disease rob her of her joy for life. After graduating in 1981, she moved home to Atlanta and worked for several local non-profits including the Atlanta Botanical Garden and The High Museum, before helping her husband Philip found Chartwell, Inc.
Sanford and Philip met as classmates at Sewanee and, after a long friendship, began dating in the Fall of 1983. They were married September 28, 1985. Following a brief period spent living in Little Rock, AR, Philip and Sanford made their home in Atlanta.
Sanford’s life centered around faith, family, and friends. Her greatest joy was her family and raising her two boys with Philip. Sanford never met a stranger and maintained close friendships with people from every stage of her life.
In addition to numerous study clubs and bible studies, she was a leader of the Good News club, an after-school bible study for elementary school students. As well as being an active member in Mimosa Garden Club and the Colonial Dames.
Sanford had an amazing eye for beauty, and following in her mother’s footsteps, loved to spend time in her garden. She also enjoyed painting watercolors, and many family and friends are lucky to have her paintings on the walls of their homes. She was never happier (or more exasperated) than she was when she was painting or spending time in the garden.
Sanford is survived by her husband of 36 years, Philip Dunklin; sons, I.S. Dunklin (Hilary), Chandler Dunklin; sister, Lisa Hinson (Ron); and niece, Liz Hinson. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to:
