It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Joseph Mannion III, of Dunwoody, on December 23, 2024. He was raised in the Bronx, New York by his late parents Martin Joseph Mannion II and Margaret “Donnellan” Mannion, along with his two deceased brothers, William and John Mannion. After attending Our Lady of Solace Catholic School, and then Rice High School in Harlem, he enlisted in the Army. Martin was stationed in Korea during peace time and was able to travel extensively throughout Asia. After serving his country, he came back to New York City and began his career working for the Gulf Oil Corporation, in the Battery in Manhattan. In 1960 he met the love of his life, Mary “McMahon” Mannion. They married in 1962, then Martin was transferred to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Temple University, where he studied history. They started their family and had their daughter Maureen and son Martin. In 1970, Martin and the family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. With over 30 years at Gulf Oil, he was able to retire in his mid-50s.
That is when the fun began. He and Mary, traveled all over the world, and went on over 40 cruises. Martin was an avid reader and an historian. He knew more about the culture, religion and history than the actual tour guides. He was a great photographer and documented all of their trips. His other interest included investing and monitoring the stock market. Like all good Irish men, he loved his Notre Dame football, and traditional Irish music.
Martin is survived by his wife Mary of over 62 years. Their children, Maureen Mannion of Decatur, Martin Mannion and his wife Ranee of Suwanee, and two grandchildren, Connor Mannion, currently servings in the Marines, based in Twentynine Palms, California and Rachel Mannion of Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
The family would also like to extend our sincere you thank to the staff at Brighton Gardens of Dunwoody, where Martin resided for the last 16 months. Also, thank you to the caregivers at Symphonia Hospice, for the care you provided over the last five months.
A mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Chamblee on January 2nd, 2025 at 11 AM, with a lunch reception to follow in the church hall. Then the burial will be at the Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery, in Sandy Springs.
