Marjorie Claire Wood Evans of Atlanta died December 21, 2020. Born October 9, 1918 in the community of Devereux in Hancock County, Georgia, Mrs. Evans was the daughter of Mable Courson Wood and George Binion Wood. Known by all as “Margie,” she was baptized in the Devereux Methodist Church and received a degree in Education from Georgia State College for Women (now Georgia College and State University) in Milledgeville. Chosen as Miss Hancock County, Mrs. Evans was a contestant in the Miss Georgia pageant in 1939. After teaching at elementary schools in Monticello and Milledgeville, she married Dr. Edwin Curtis Evans of Milledgeville in 1945 after his service in the United States Army in World War II in the Pacific theater had kept them apart for 42 months. The newlyweds lived in Baltimore in during his medical residency and, upon settling in Atlanta in 1947, established his internal medicine practice. Mrs. Evans was a member of the Northside Methodist Church since 1956 and was active in various auxiliary medical organizations including serving as Chair of the American Heart Association campaign in Atlanta in the mid-1960s. She was a charter member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club. A genuinely refined Southern lady, Mrs. Evans was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved and served her family unselfishly and with unfailing grace, good humor, and optimism. Surviving Mrs. Evans are daughter Nancy Evans of Atlanta; Ed Evans of Augusta; Margie Hatcher of Marietta; daughters and sons-in-law Jane and James H. Patton of Nashville, Tennessee, Jill and Gary Spooner of Auburn, Alabama, and Carol and Rob Bomar of Nashville, Tennessee; 23 grandchildren; and 61 great-grandchildren. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Evans’ loyal caregivers, Nancy Kuto and Jackie Mwati, who blessed her for many years. A private, graveside service with family will be December 28, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Georgia; Dr. Gary Spooner will officiate.
