Leland Clovis Thomas, Jr, age 63 of Dunwoody, Georgia, passed away on November 12, 2024. Leland was born on August 19, 1961 in Atlanta, (Fulton County) Georgia, the son of Leland Clovis Thomas, Sr. and Martha Nell Conine Thomas.
He graduated from Peachtree High School in 1979, then attended Berry College in Rome Georgia where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Religion in 1983. He continued his education, and in 1987 he graduated with a Master of Divinity Degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
While in high school, Leland was an active member of the chorus and enjoyed other school activities. While in Louisville he worked with the youth of First Baptist Church.
Leland loved the Lord and accepted Christ as his savior during his youth days at Chamblee Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. David Sapp. Later in life, he was an active member of the singles ministry at Dunwoody Baptist Church. He volunteered with a number of organizations and especially enjoyed tutoring students with school work. Growing up, Leland enjoyed visiting and playing with his cousins when he and his family visited the Thomas family home in Calvary, Georgia. He enjoyed watching football games on TV. He looked forward to Christmas and the way his sister Janet decorated the house with all the decorations and lights. He was very smart. As such, he was a book worm, reading everything he could get his hands on. He enjoyed eating, especially turkey and dressing from Cracker Barrel, chicken parmigiana from Olive Garden, and the delicious meals his caregivers prepared during the latter stages of his life. He developed a special bond with Jalen and Charlotte who provided excellent care for him up until his death.
Following the passing of his sister Janet, Leland's faith was stretched as he sought to understand how God was working in these events. But even so, Leland still recognized the power of prayer, and he welcomed opportunities to join with others in prayer.
Leland is preceded in death by his parents Leland Sr. and Martha Thomas and sister Janet Elizabeth Thomas. He is survived by many loving cousins and other family members.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at Noon with a service at 1:00 PM at H. M. Paterson & Son – Arlington Chapel in Sandy Springs, Georgia, with Rev Rick Gillert officiating.
Donations in Leland’s memory may be made to Berry College (Student Work and Scholarships), or “Angling in Grief Support”, a non-profit organization that uses fly fishing in North Georgia to assist those grieving the loss of loved ones. Contact Rev. Rick Gillert at 404-825-0168 for more details.
