Julia Lewis Rowan passed away on Friday the 6th of March 2015 at the age of 91, after a long and wonderful life. Born on July 27, 1923, she grew up in Satartia, Mississippi, daughter of the late Fay and Garnett Lewis. Her siblings, Franklin Lewis, II and Cecelia Lewis Thomas, have all preceded her in death. Following high school graduation from Satartia High School, she attended Millsaps College and graduated from the University of Mississippi. In 1944 she worked as a chemist on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. There, she met Hoke A. Rowan the love of her life, and married him in 1945. After the war ended, they relocated to Port Arthur, Texas for 10 years, before settling in Atlanta in 1956 to raise their children, Diane Rowan Drake and Randy Rowan. The family grew up in St. James United Methodist Church since 1959. There she was involved in teaching, Altar Guild, Circle, and Boards. Julia was active with the entire family in Hunter Jumper horseback riding and showing for many years. Julia worked in the travel business and was also an avid traveler. She and Hoke toured foreign countries annually, and saw virtually every country in the world. They both loved traveling and looked forward to their 2 trips yearly. Julia also enjoyed all sports and was especially a loyal supporter of her college football team, the Ole Miss Rebels. Julia was a member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club, active playing golf, tennis, and Bridge. Julia volunteered weekly for 11 years at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she was also very active with the Phi Mu Alumnae Chapter receiving her 50 year pin. Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Hoke A. Rowan, Jr.; daughter, Diane Rowan Drake (Lee); son, Dr. Randy Rowan; grandson, Matthew L. Drake (Taryn); and 1 great-grandson, Hayden Hoke Drake. Memorial services celebrating Julia’s life will be held on Tuesday the 10th of March at two o’clock at St. James United Methodist Church. Prior to the memorial the family will have gathered for a private interment at Arlington Memorial Park. Friends are cordially invited to a reception and time of visitation following the memorial service at the church.
