Johnny “John” Inman Self, 80, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Audrey (Herndon) Self; his two daughters, Shelli Carson and Natalie Walden; his son in law Gant Walden and his four grandchildren, Reed Carson, Mason Walden, Madison Walden and McKenzie Carson; his brother, Frank Self; his sister Sarah Hentosh; and many other relatives and friends. Born and raised in Sandy Springs, Georgia, the son of James M. Self and Nellie P. Self, he retired in Tulsa in 1999 after many years of working across the states for Gulf, Chevron and Warren Petroleum Company. In his adolescents, he shined shoes at a barber shop and worked at a service station while attending Northside High School in Atlanta, graduating in 1955. Johnny later attended Georgia State University for Business, going to school at night and working during the day to pay his way through. In 1960, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama for a computer technician position with Gulf Oil (later Chevron). It was in Birmingham where he met Audrey Herndon, the two getting engaged after 6 weeks of dating and married 3 months after. As Johnny began to move up in the ranks of Chevron, his job began to move him around the states, welcoming Shelli in Atlanta in 1966, and Natalie in Houston in 1970. Through the remainder of his occupation, he resided in Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, and Tulsa. Johnny was a dedicated businessman, believing you should work for everything in your life, and nothing comes that easily; a mentality he has passed down to his younger family. Johnny had a big heart and a big mind, with an astounding ability to make friends with anyone he ever met. He loved his collectible cars, his cats and his computer, but most of all he loved his family, taking time to sacrifice anything for the ones he cherished in his heart. It was Johnny’s mission to provide a fulfilling life not only for himself, but for his wife, daughters, grandchildren, or whoever would lend an ear for a few jokes. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Sandy Springs Chapel at 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy NE, Sandy Springs, Georgia. The viewing will begin at 1:00pm; the service will begin at 3:00pm. A Memorial Service will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 2:00pm.
