Freida Ferguson Ellis, 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, June 14th. Daughter of the late Price Richard and Naomi Ruth Ferguson. She was born in Gastonia, NC. Then moved to Baton Rouge in ninth grade where she attended Baton Rouge High School and Louisiana State University. She became a “Fighting Tiger” and graduated Suma Con Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Freida was known as Mom, Momma, Gigi, Fritos, and Freida Jane. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Captain James William Ellis USAF, her sister Brenda Ferguson Babb and her son Richard Eric Ellis. She is survived by her son, Scott William Ellis, and her daughter, Kimberly Oliver, and five grandchildren, Travis and Tyler Ellis, David, Matthew, and Emily Oliver, and four great grandchildren, Travis Jr., Logan, Eli, and Oakley Ellis.
Upon her husband’s death in 1962, she moved to Atlanta with her three young children. She joined the Secretary of Senate’s Office at our state capital while she served as Bill Clerk under three Senate Secretaries. After completing full time employment, she returned for numerous legislative sessions to assist in the business of the state and serve the citizens of Georgia. She retired at 80 years of age. Upon her retirement, Senate Resolution #364 was unanimously passed in recognizing her outstanding achievements and service to the state of Georgia proclaiming her an “Outstanding Georgia Citizen and a Goodwill Ambassador” from Georgia and to other states and beyond our borders.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, she was an active member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church for over thirty years.
Thank you to all family and friends for so much love in her life. We'll miss her sense of humor, fun and joy she brought to our lives.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, June 25th, at 1:30, at Kairos Church, 5855 Riverside Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Freida’s name to Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
