He was an inventor, entrepreneur, and successful small business owner who was often described as a “pioneer in the appliance industry.” He was a strong man, loving husband, faithful father, and caring grandfather. Charlie was born in Sandy Springs, Georgia on August 11, 1932, to Guy and Nancy Adeline Sewell. He was the eighth of nine brothers and sisters. Guy and Addie raised their family in Sandy Springs to love God, to work hard, and to serve the community. Charlie grew up in the Sandy Springs Baptist Church where he was a life-long member. In 1962, Charlie married his late wife, Sue Burns, at the First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs. That same year, Charlie and Sue started Sewell Appliance after purchasing an appliance service company from Tim Ovbey. Sewell Appliance Sales and Service was owned and operated by Charlie and his sons for over 50 years, making it the city’s oldest business. The family business began with just a desk and a telephone in a shared office space with Sandy Springs Heating and Air. As the company and city grew, Charlie added a sales component to the business and taught his sons how to sell, deliver, and install appliances. With Charlie’s hard work and discipline and with the help of his sons and dedicated employees, the once one-room service company grew into one of the largest showrooms and most respected appliance businesses in the Southeast. Outside the business, Charlie loved the outdoors. He especially enjoyed fishing and bird hunting with his family, friends, and his dogs. He also loved baseball. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan his whole life and caught a World-Series ball in 1991. Charlie was a hard worker; he did everything from building Buicks for GM to mixing syrup for Coca-Cola and keeping a vegetable garden. Charlie never met a stranger, and he was always eager to help others. In 2008, Charlie married Mickey Peacock. Together they enjoyed travelling, going to baseball games, and adoring their grandchildren. He and Mickey loved serving the community through volunteering with The Community Meal at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. Charlie was respected and loved by many. He loved his big family well. Survivors include his wife Mickey Sewell, sons and daughters in law, Stan and Elizabeth Sewell of Marietta and Andy and Jane Elizabeth Sewell of Cumming. Stepchildren Allison Carter of Cumming, Jeffery Peacock of Asheville, NC and Amanda and her husband, Dan Sawyer of Tampa. Also surviving are his two sisters, Fannie Mae King of Alpharetta and Nancy Morris of Cumming and grandchildren Rachael Sewell, Emily and her husband Andrew Compton, Anna Sewell, Daniel Sewell, Jackson Carter, Jared Carter and numerous nieces and nephews.
