Joseph (Joe) John Sciacca, 82, of East Sandwich, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 10, 2024. Joe was born on March 17, 1942, in Itala, Sicily, to Anthony and Stephanie Sciacca. Joe and his family moved to America in 1956 to start a new life and to be reunited with his eldest brother, Natale. Joe served in the Navy from 1960-1964, during which time the destroyer on which he served was deployed to Cuba to assist with the Cuban Missile Crisis.
After his service, Joe briefly worked for General Motors until he discovered his passion for building. His meticulous attention to detail was unmatched. He would go on to build houses for more than 30 years, including the one in which he and his beloved wife, Flavia, raised their four children. Joe met Flavia on the best blind date in history on August 19, 1966. After sharing maple walnut ice cream at Wallace’s Ice Cream, Joe worked his magic to convince Flavia’s father to allow him to take her out for dinner and dancing the next evening. They were married on April 8,1967.
Joe was also an accomplished painter, entirely self-taught. His award-winning landscapes and portraits are a reminder to friends and family of his love for them and the beautiful landscape of Cape Cod. Joe enjoyed camping, biking and walking along the canal with his beloved dog, Rocky.
Joe loved his family and he and Flavia spent countless weekends hosting cookouts and Sunday dinners, followed by backyard Bocce. The sound of Joe’s laugh and his boisterous retelling of stories could always be heard throughout the spectacular gardens he and Flavia cultivated in their yard. His warmth and good humor were matched only by his generosity of spirit.
Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Flavia, their four children and their spouses, Tina Freebody (Brett), Linda Bona (Miklos), Anthony Sciacca (Debbie) and Gina Lai (Chuck). He is also survived by his grandchildren Justin, Casey, Miki, Lexi, Benny, Vinnie, Violet, Ciana and Marley. Joe leaves his siblings and their spouses, Natale Sciacca, Frank Sciacca and Maria Sciacca (Tom) and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his brother-in-law Anthony LaScala and his wife Lynda. Joe was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Stephanie Sciacca, his in-laws Natale and Grazia LaScala, and his sister-in-law Geri.
