I will never forget the most valuable advice I ever received. I had just found out that I got into my dream school—the entire family and I were happily crying and dancing from the good news. Ong suddenly called out my name loudly that everyone paused to listen to him. He asked me, "Kelly, where are you going for school?" I answered, "UC San Diego." He responded, "What are you studying there?" "Neurobiology." My answer did not satisfy him, so he further asked, "What do you want to do?" "I want to be a doctor." He nodded and said, "You got into your dream school and you are studying to become a doctor. You have a dream, now take it and run with it. Throughout your life, there will always be obstacles or people who will try to stop you but you must keep running with it until you get what you want. You must keep going."  Keep in mind that this was during a time when my grandfather's speech was very limited and delayed, so it took a lot of energy and thinking from him to say all of this. I was touched by his words because there were people in my life who didn't believe in me. But I always had him to believe in me. I still carry his advice till this day and will continue to for the rest of my life. Sang Bui was my grandpa, my hero, and my best friend. I have so much to tell you, Ong. I am excited to meet you again and share a good laugh like we always did. 

Anh Sang,
You lived your life to glorify God; to serve and to love other.
You were  a good example for us.
May our loving God rewards you with the Happiness that you gave us.

Tôi gặp anh Sang lần đầu năm 2009 trong dịp họp mặt thường lệ của các bạn cùng học tại trường trung học Lý Thường Kiệt nơi chị Yến đã theo học từ năm 1963 tới 1965.  Sau dịp ấy tôi có nhiều dịp gặp lại anh chị và gia đình tại San Jose.  Trong những dịp gặp gỡ ấy anh chị và gia đình đã cho tôi những cảm nghĩ rất đẹp về một gia đình rất êm ấm hòa thuận.  Tôi có dịp nhìn thấy lần đầu tiên một gia đình có ba thế hệ:  cha mẹ, con gái và 3 cháu ngoại sống chung với nhau trên thuận dưới hòa.  Ông bà ngoại chăm sóc các cháu để mẹ các cháu có thể đi làm một công việc đòi hỏi nhiều thời giờ và sự khéo léo trong việc giao tiếp.  Chi cũng hết lòng kính trọng, tin tưởng và chăm sóc bố mẹ.  Cô luôn luôn có mặt khi anh Sang phải đi nhà thương để chắc chắn bố được những sự chăm sóc y tế cần thiết.  Ba cháu ngoại của anh chị, Sharon, Kelly và Troy rất mực yêu thương và vâng lời ông bà.  Chính anh đã góp phần tạo dựng nên gia đình gương mẫu này.   Anh thân thiện với chúng tôi, bạn chị Yến và chúng tôi rất qúy mến anh.
Anh Sang, bây giờ anh đã ở gần Chúa.  Lời anh xin Chúa giúp để cho những người anh yêu thương còn lại được tiếp tục sống đẹp lòng Chúa và tiếp tục sống với nhau trong tình yêu thương anh đã bắt đầu 
ấy chắc sẽ được Chúa chấp thuận.

To my Ông,

Thank you for being the kindest person to have ever graced this world. You taught me to always stay optimistic and to keep my chin up even when times were difficult. Whenever I had my lows in life, you never failed to make me laugh with your goofiness or silly banter with Bà. Not only did you highlight my days, you also raised me throughout my girlhood. I will never forget the times when you walked with me to preschool. In the mornings, you and I had no idea what was the appropriate outfit to wear to school, and you would let me walk out of the house in my pajamas or ripped tights. When I got my first period at age 12, you would always remind me to change my pad every two hours because I was not used to it. In November 2021, I remember sitting by your bedside and telling you how I had told my previous manager that I hated the job, and you simply laughed at me because I was too direct and honest. Although these memories are considered embarrassing, I believe they are valuable because you were there to witness me learn and grow into the woman I am now. I appreciate you for raising, teaching, and protecting me the past 24 years of my life. I am sad that you’re not here to hold my hand anymore, but I will always remember and smile back at the memories you have imprinted in my heart. 

Memories of my Dad are the endless movie playing in my mind.  As his only child, he loved and spoiled in every way he could.
I remember when I was young, Dad cooked for me and Mom every day and fed me before I went to school.  He did laundry and cleaned the house when Mom was sick or busy.  He did not want me to do anything.  He wanted me to study and be a good Catholic person.  I love singing.  I remember when I had performance or competition, he gave me his guidance and comment.  I was ensured he was somewhere down there in the crowd to watch me.  He encouraged me when I was nervous before the performance.  He lifted me up when I was not in first place at school and put more efforts to teach me math so I will do better.  I felt safe when I saw him outside my classroom and waited for me to go home.  I enjoyed when he crawled around the house and carried me on his back.  I liked when he put me on his ankles and raised me up by his legs while he laid down.  He was not only my Father but also my teacher, friend, audience and supporter.
Until I became a woman with my three children, he supported me when I made important decisions.  When troubles came, I was silence at our table as usual and waited until he sat next to me.  When I came home late, he told my kids to save food which he knew I liked it.  When he was very sick and tired, he did not want to eat or drink or take medication until I talked to him.  When he was in the hospital at night without me and Mom, the nurse called me and put him on speaker so he would take medication.  
Now I am still looking for him when I have coffee in the morning.  Every time before I leave home, I always stand in front of the mirror.  But he is not here anymore to tell me I look beautiful.
My Dad was my hero; now it’s time for me to be his and save his memory from the grips of time.  My love for him is more than a memory, it’s all of me.
Dad, thank you for your everlasting love!

To my husband, Giuse BUI DUY SANG!

Thanks God and thank you for giving me a wonderful only daughter and three grandchildren.  I am very happy to be your wife and proud to be a mother of your child.  You are my first love and also the last one in my life.  Miss you!  Rest in peace.

I am a nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was staying, he fought hard everyday to stay with his family.  He is a very brave Vietnam veteran who I was proud to care for.  When his grandkids flew in to visit him that night, I believe he was finally able to rest in peace, he saw them and heard them one final time before he left us. I will never forget this great man, and it was an honor to care for him.

I miss waking up to seeing him at the kitchen table eating breakfast with my grandma. I miss his laugh whenever he does something funny or whenever my grandma gets annoyed with him. I miss hearing him always asking whether the front and back doors are locked yet for the night. I miss watching movies and videos with him and seeing his reactions to it. I miss him saying thank you to me whenever I help him go back to bed with my grandma. I miss when he would wave goodbye to my sisters and I when my grandma drove us to school. I miss him always asking where my grandma is and where did she go. I miss him always waiting for my grandma to get home so they could eat together. I miss shaking his hand. I miss me saluting him and him saluting back at me. I miss going to church with him. But the most memorable thing about my grandpa that I will always miss was his love for his wife, daughter, and grandchildren. I will always miss his happiness around us and his last moment surrounded with us. I miss you grandpa and I can’t wait to see you again. 🫡

Mr Sang Bui , always had a beautiful smile on him. He was a very loving, caring and soft spoken gentleman. 
And one of the luckiest person I know who had such a dedicated wife , loving daughter and wonderful grandchildren always around him.
