Richard passed away peacefully at home with his wife, children and grandchildren by his side. He was preceded in death by his father Richard Tanaka, his mother Mae Tanaka and his sister June (Kaz) Naganuma. Richard was born in San Jose and is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; his three sons, Craig (Sandy), Todd (Estelle), Trent (Cheryl) and daughter Sandy (Craig) Hillesland; seven grandchildren; Ryan, Caitlin, Griffin, Owen, Lindsey, Miya and Madeline and his sister Barbara (Walt) Uyeda.
Richard graduated from the University of Michigan (BA Architecture) and from San Jose State University (MA City and Urban Planning). Richard practiced architecture in San Jose with Steinberg Architects until his retirement. He contributed to the planning and design of many civic, educational and residential buildings during his architectural career.
He was a strong supporter of education serving on the Board of Trustees for both the East Side Union High School District for 21 years and on the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District for 20 years. He was an active member of the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, the San Jose Rotary, the San Jose Japanese American Citizens League and was a founder of Happi House Restaurants. Richard authored the book, “America on Trial!”, where he expressed his thoughts on his internment experiences during World War II.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin. The family greatly appreciates all of the remembrances that have been made. Richard will be deeply missed by all. The family also wants to thank the staff of VITAS Hospice Healthcare for all of their caring support.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, 640 N. 5th Street, San Jose, CA 95112.
