Hi Grandpa, 

How are you doing? Is it nice up there? We are doing good down here. It's been awhile since we talked about current news, your writings, and the latest gadgets. I get the current news from you it seems. The Ukraine war is such a mess these days. The kids are doing well in school and Collin has made money over the summer doing programming (making mods for Minecraft). Dylan is always teasing his older brother Collin. When I'm not busy, I play Wordle and the aunties, cousins and I have a group chat about it.  Thanks for listening Grandpa, til next time.

Some may know him as Tuong Pham, Duong Huế Anh: the poet, a friend to many, a dad to 12, but to me, he was grandpa or Ong. The man who used to drive me and my brother around and take us to meet all of his friends. The same one, who would take us down the street every morning to pay for his daily newspaper and banana with his bag of coins. 
Looking back, I didn’t realize how special it was that I got to share those seemingly ordinary memories with my grandfather. I got to see how he lived his day to day life and how much joy he brought not only to our family but to his  community. I know that if he was here right now, he would want us to celebrate the incredible 96 year life that he lived. A life full of happiness, travel, books, a constant thirst for knowledge and most importantly love. Thank you  Ong for showing us the power of hard work and sacrifice. Without your drive and perseverance to make a better life for yourself and your family after fleeing a war torn country we would not all be here today. He is one of my biggest heroes today and everyday. He was patient and he was kind and knowledgeable beyond compare. Leaving behind  8 daughters and 4 sons, 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, I hope you know that your legacy will live on. Your endless thirst for knowledge and need to help others will be carried on by the next generation. I hope you and grandma are able to look down on us right now and be proud of the family that you created. You will forever be in our hearts. We love and miss you both.

My Love and Prayers are with Hanh and Family. He is in all your Hearts and Souls! Pham was a gentle soul and I am so Blessed to have met him at his 90th birthday. Two of his Great-Granddaughters, Great Grandson, and my Granddaughter, Reese, put on a dance show for him, and he had the biggest and proud smile, watching them. His children have his gentleness and kindness from him, and I'm sure their Mother, whom I never had the pleasure to meet. They are all very smart, educated, and productive in the business world, instilled by their Father.  But what stands out to me is  that, they are a very close family, always there for one another.  May they be Blessed with Comfort at this time of Great Loss of Their Beloved Father, Pham. I Love You, Hanh! 

Grandpa, always wanted the best for all of us. I enjoyed the time delivering food to Grandpa, the food my mom made. These were the times I can see him personally and talked to him. He had a great memory and remember everyone name. I miss Grandma to, she pass away too young and too soon. Everything is moving too fast, I cherish all the memories of Grandpa, and an opportunity to know him, I will always remember him and grateful to be part of the big family.

(Vietnamese version) Ông Phạm Ngọc Tường, bố chồng tôi thực sự quan tâm đến mọi người mà ông biết. Mỗi khi chúng tôi gặp nhau, bố luôn hỏi tôi đang làm gì, cha mẹ thế nào, con tôi thế nào.
Ông thường nói rằng hãy luôn luôn cố gắng làm mọi công việc với khả năng tốt nhất mà mình có thể làm được, luôn luôn giữ dìn sức khỏe và thay đổi cuộc sống của chúng ta để thích nghi và điều chỉnh vì thay đổi là luôn luôn trong cuộc sống của mình.  Điều này tạo ra một ký ức sâu sắc mà tôi có về cha chồng tôi.
Tôi nhớ bố chồng tôi rất nhiều nhưng suy nghĩ của tôi về bố và mẹ chồng tôi bây giờ họ đang ở trên thiên đàng cùng nhau và điều này giúp tôi giảm bớt nỗi buồn về sự ra đi của ông.




-------(English version) Mr Pham Ngoc Tuong, my father in law genuinely cares about everyone that he knows. Whenever we met, he always asked how am I doing, how are parents doing, how are my children doing.
He often said to always try to do everything with the best of our ability that you can, staying healthy and making changes in our lives to adapt and adjust since change is constant in life.  This creates a profound memory that I have of my father in law.  

I miss my father in law very much but my thought about both of my parents in law is that they are now in heaven together and this helps ease my sadness about his departure.




A beautiful tribute to a much-loved patriarch. My deepest condolences and sympathy for the loss of your father. How wonderful to hear about his poetry. May the poems be a source of joy and comfort for the immediate family and future generations. 

Although I didn't have the chance to meet Pham Ngoc Tuong, I am fortunate to call Alexandria Pham and Christine Bui my long-time friends. Their warmth, intelligence, professionalism, and love and loyalty are reflections of the strength and stability of their family, and of their ancestors who have gone before. Pham Ngoc Tuong's legacy will continue to echo through future generations. I wish you blessings and peace during this sad time.

Father in law, when I think of you, I will think back of fond memories of a man that had a lasting legacy that is measured by a life of significance.   Your love of family, character of integrity, and kindness are woven in the lives of your children and generations of grandchildren.  The inheritance of your ethos shall eternally live through all of us, and each of us are indebted to your life’s sacrifices that helped make us the family we are today.

I know you are living the dream right now and you are looking down on us, watching us as we strive to make you proud. Though we morn that you are gone we know you are happy now, free to fly to where every you want to be. Tell Ba Noi we missed her when you see her. With every note I play on the piano it will always have a part of you in it.

I thought hard about this since I’m one of the few grandkids that remember grandpa when he was younger.

I told this story to my friend a few years ago after the 2016 election.  I didn’t realize until now what an impact Grandpa had on me at a young age.

Story takes place during the 1984 election and my 2nd grade class is having craft time where we make either a Donkey or Elephant.  As you may already know each animal represents one of the political parties.  I picked the Elephant since Grandpa was voting for Reagan.  Even at 7 years old I thought, Reagan is must be great since Grandpa thinks he’s great.  He unknowingly influenced me at the time.  Looking back, Grandpa was and still is one of my role models.  He was logical, brilliant, poetic, kind and knew just about everything.   My one regret is not speaking to him more during the family parties.   I would love to have his books translated in English so I can get to know him this way.  

Love and miss you Grandpa.

I love you Ong. I’ll always remember you as a free and independent man playing piano at any chance you got. I hope you are at peace in your next life and we will meet again ♥️

     Thank you for taking care of us for many years, being a responsible father, teaching us important values, entertaining us with your musical talents, sharing your poetic writing skills, encouraging us to improve in skills & knowledge, relocating us to a land of opportunities, overcoming adversities…From you, I learn to write poetically, overcome adversities, value education & skills, treat people kindly, care for others, continue learning…For years, you spoiled us with gifts 🎁, worked endlessly, searched for economic opportunities, formed tight friendship, read & wrote prolifically, entertained us with your musical talents, collected treasures, delved into various endeavors, traveled to various destinations…We misses those times with you. We love ❤️ you deeply, dearly and infinitely. Someday, we will meet you  again.

Grandpa- I will always remember how full a live you are. You always had something to do and lived life to the fullest. I will always remember helping you fix your computers and asking me for advice on what electronics was better. Anytime there was a piano you always there to play a song. I miss you and love you. I know you’re in heaven loving life, writing, playing music and smiling. You will always be remembered.

One funny memory is when I thought I had "lost" my first pair of running shoes which at the time was very expensive to me. To no one's surprise, we find out that grandpa was wearing them at the airport to send off Tri Pham'ing's family to NC. Tatyana Pham took that pic and it had the lululemon bag...😅 I guess we can continue that trend of disappearing footwear as well 🙂

Dear Ong Ngoai, 
Thank you for everything you have done for our family. Your patience and wisdom is unmatched. I will cherish the memories of growing up with you and Ba Ngoai. I wish I could have spent more time with you these past few years and for you to have met Emery but I know you and Ba Ngoai will always be looking over us.

No words can describe the greatest man of my life. The man who survives through 3 wars, who lives with all his mighty to protect and support his loving wife and 12 children, who for all his life never gives up his mission as a citizen of a civil war. Dearest dad -
Although you are not physically here with us, you are forever in my heart and soul.  You have taught me so much; you are my inspiration and model I look up everyday to be a better person, to accept our fate, to always work hard, to save and not to worry so much.  You are my true hero, so talented and intelligent handsome man, father.  I love you forever and thank you very much for being my father.   Now, you are up in heaven with mom and looking down to see what we do everyday until we can join you forever.

Bo, 
It seems like yesterday Bo were still here with us ..Your wisdom words are still on my head that you kept telling me how to save money and be patient/calm.  Bo said to con that 'If you made $5 , you have at least to save $1 ok'.  I remembered every time I took you to see your friends or to Van Tho Lac Viet  that lighting up your day.  Bo, you loved music and writing poetry/books.. You were such a talented person with all the skills as playing piano/Mandolin, a book/poetry writer..so much more .. and unfortunately that I did not get any one of your skills .You also loved to read  and researched about Buddha, Chines medicine, Acupuncture, Health..
Bo, you were a such wonderful, loving Father and  left us with all  good memories.. I will miss you very much but I'm happy that you are with Mom now.
