With profound sadness we announce the passing, on July 2, 2022, at 2:22AM, of Natalie
Nguyễn Thị Nguyệt, our loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, and aunt to
all whose lives she touched. Natalie is survived by her mother, her husband, her two
children, her two step-children, her step-grandchild, and her seven siblings and their
families.
She left us after an enduring and courageous thirteen-year battle with cancer, at her
home in San Jose, CA, surrounded by many of her loved ones and close friends. She
was in her 67th year. Natalie was born June 6, 1955, in Đông-Hà, Quảng-Trị, Vietnam.
She spent her formative years in Huế, and attended the All-Girls Đồng Khánh High
School. Her upbringing was significantly influenced by the imperial city’s traditions
and teaching, as well as by the devastation of the war and civil conflicts of the time.
Upon the fall of Saigon in 1975, she fled by boat with her family to a refugee camp in
Singapore and later settled in Springfield, MO. As the second oldest child of eight
siblings, Natalie shouldered most of the responsibilities, holding several jobs to help the
family adapt and thrive in their new land. Yet with determination, she was still able to
attend college, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, having attended Drury
College (now Drury University) and Southwest Missouri State University (now
Missouri State University). During her last semester in college, she helped her parents
open the first Vietnamese-owned restaurant in the region and successfully managed its
operations and expansion for 17 years.
Natalie faithfully participated in the annual Marian Days pilgrimage every year at the
Congregation of the Mother of the Redeemer in nearby Carthage, MO. It was here
where her devotion to Mother Mary deepened, and her spiritual growth firmly
germinated.
In 1995, the family relocated to San Jose, CA where she helped set up and manage her
brother and his wife’s medical clinic & plastic surgery center in San Jose and Milpitas,
CA. A few years later, she met her husband Phil and they have been married for 21 yrs.
Despite all the trials and tribulations of life, Natalie’s faith in God never wavered. Most
notably, her spiritual growth took an exponential leap forward after joining the Cursillo
Movement. The authenticity of her trust in God was most clearly revealed during the
final agonizing days of illness. She was at peace. She was ready to go “home” with
“Thầy Chí Thánh”.
Natalie might be gone from sight, but she lives on forever in our hearts. May God rest
her soul.
In Memoriam, Natalie’s Family
