Audrey Overshiner Humburg, age 101, opened her eyes, smiled at her family, and passed away peacefully in her own bed Saturday afternoon. Descended from hearty pioneer Puritans, Quakers, and Mormons, she became a pioneer in her own right when she served among the first Lady Leatherneck Marines during WWII. As a Staff Sargent in Recruiting stationed in Dallas, Texas, she had the honor of escorting the men who raised the American Flag on Iwo Jima on a Bond Tour during the War.
Audrey was born in Berkeley, California during WWI, grew up in Willow Glen, graduated from San Jose High and Heald's Business College during the Great Depression, and served in recruiting as a Staff Sergeant during WWII. She then married her high school sweetheart, Wilbur (Bill) Humburg and settled in Honolulu, Hawaii for the first years of her marriage. Audrey and Bill returned to San Jose to start their family, building a home and living in Campbell until she entered a retirement community in Morgan Hill at the age of 96.
She was blessed with strength of character, unstoppable energy, an engaging personality, and unsurpassed organizational abilities that allowed her to work as a secretary at San Jose City College, while contributing in leadership roles to numerous local organizations including Order of Eastern Star, Sigma Tau Delta Business Sorority, Episcopal Church Women, and Blackberry Women's Golf Club. As a founding member of St Francis Episcopal Church in Willow Glen, she volunteered in all aspects of church life including helping in the office and compiling the bulletins at the age of 93. She also found time to travel extensively throughout the world.
Audrey was proceeded in death by her husband Wilbur and granddaughter Bethany. She was surrounded by the love of her remaining family: devoted daughter Debra Ullmann (Geoff), adored grandchildren, Katy Ullmann, Greg Ullmann (Mhavick), and loving great-grandchildren Marthena and Gemaria. She will be remembered for her strength, devotion to family, and fun-loving spirit!
Friends and family are invited to a Holy Eucharist in celebration of her life on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at St John the Devine Episcopal Church on 17740 Peak Ave in Morgan Hill. Please consider donating the personal gift of kindness and time to someone in need in Audrey's memory.
