James "Jim" Robert Moore

James Robert (Jim) Moore, 73, of San Francisco, California passed away February 15, 2022 at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. A celebration of life and interment in the Greeley (Nebraska) Sacred Heart Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Jim was born May 12, 1948 in Spalding, Nebraska. His parents, Robert and Betty Moore, raised him on a small farm about three miles East of Greeley, Nebraska.

When he was approximately 4 years old, his Uncle Eugene Davey unexpectedly passed away, and Jim and his parents moved to the Davey farm to live with his Aunt Louise Davey and her 3 children. The Davey farm was in the dairy business, delivering milk and cream daily to local households.

Jim loved the farm lifestyle, and immediately took to raising chickens, cattle, and horses. Over the years, he raised chickens, selling them to families of the community.

He attended Sacred Heart School in Greeley, graduating from a class of 27 students in 1966.

Shortly after his graduation, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where he worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant, for ordnance supplied for the Viet Nam War, on a bomb assembly line.

That fall, he enrolled in the Grand Island School of Business and graduated in 1967. The following fall he enrolled in Kearney State College, in Kearney, Nebraska. He majored in Journalism and was editor of the college newspaper his junior year. He graduated from Kearney State College in May, 1971, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.

Following graduation in May, 1971, he moved to San Francisco, California and obtained employment as an office manager for the George S. May International Company, a management consulting firm.

On August 3, 1977 he was accepted as a deputy sheriff with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department and remained employed with that organization through March 8, 2004. During his career, he served in nearly every division and jail in the department. He was promoted to Senior Deputy in 1981. In September, 1982, Jim was promoted to “Acting Sheriff’s Sergeant” and placed in charge of the Investigative Services Unit. In September, 1984 he was appointed to the Sergeant position on a permanent basis—a position he held for the remainder of his career.

Though he enjoyed nearly every assignment he was given, he particularly recalled supervising a detail of deputies to secure the Geary Street/Masonic Avenue tunnel during the visit of Pope John Paul II, to San Francisco in September 1987.

He also had the opportunity to meet Mother Teresa during one of her visits to San Francisco to meet with then Mayor Diane Feinstein in the mid 1980s.

When the Sheriff of Nottingham (England) and his delegation paid a diplomatic visit to San Francisco in the 1980s, Jim was again placed in charge of a detail to escort the Sheriff to his various meetings around the City.

He retired after 26 1/2 years of service at the rank of Sergeant on March 8, 2004.

Jim was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Patrick Moore, sister Ann Bruns, and his longtime partner, James Roediger.

Survivors include sisters Ellen (Dan) Gitt of Kearney, Nebraska and Kathleen (Paul) Glaser of Spalding, Nebraska, sister-in-law Tami Moore of Kearney, Nebraska, brother-in-law Dennis Bruns of Grand Island, Nebraska, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
