Vittorio “Reno,” “Da” DiCarlo peacefully passed away during the night of Wednesday April 27th, 2022 after coming home very happily from an assisted care facility. The days after returning home he was visited daily by loved ones who helped care for him.
Reno was born June 28th, 1934, in Santa Ninfa, Sicily to Antonino and Michelina DiCarlo. During his very early years he helped his family by working as a shepherd starting at the age of 6. As a teenager and into his twenties he transitioned to working in general construction and plumbing. Leaving Santa Ninfa for Venezuela, Reno worked as a clothing reseller and then partnered with a friend to open his first restaurant around 1962. After living in Venezuela for a couple of more years, Reno moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he met the love of his life, Grace DiCarlo.
Reno and Grace moved to San Diego in 1969 where he started working construction jobs for the housing developers building new homes in Santee, Mira Mesa, and Rancho Bernardo. It was during this time that Reno and Grace got back into the restaurant business by opening a couple of restaurants over the next 30 years. Reno’s Pizzeria, Reno’s Casa de Italia, and Reno’s Italian Restaurant were in Clairemont and Mira Mesa. Numerous customers loved the food so much that they would ask about buying sausage and bread directly from Reno. He would make extra batches and proudly deliver them locally for those customers.
Reno will be remembered by the stories he told of his life’s adventures growing up with his siblings, living in different countries, running restaurants, and helping build so many homes in San Diego. His outgoing nature and humor with everyone he spoke to made sure that he never met a stranger. No one new came into his life that he did not welcome with open arms and plenty of stories.
Reno is survived by three children, Patty Pellegrino (Nino), Tony DiCarlo (Bea), and Michele DiCarlo. Four Brothers, Michele DiCarlo (Rosita), Vincenzo DiCarlo, Andrea DiCarlo, and Joe DiCarlo (Carmela). Nine Grandchildren, Joe Pellegrino (Cindy), Josie Gonzalez (Felipe), Grace Parra (Luis), Vittorio Pellegrino, Vittorio DiCarlo, Nick DiCarlo, Grace DiCarlo, Joe Barngrover, and Vittoria Barngrover.
