Salvatore D'Amato passed away on November 12, 017. He was born in Porticello, Sicily, on July 26, 1920 to Pietro and Pasqua D'Amato. During World War II Sal was a soldier in the Italian army, and spent eight monthsas a POW at the Horbling camp, England. In 1947 Salvatore married Rosa, the love of his life, and they were blessed with four children. He worked for many years in Peru and Panama for a company that produced fishmeal. Sal came to San Diego with his family in 1968 and worked as a tuna fisherman. Salvatore is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rosa, four children; Pete, Esther, Tony (Maria) and Gaetano; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held from 5-8pm Monday, Nov. 20 at Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary, 3655 5th Ave., San Diego. Rosary and Mass will be held at 9am on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of the Rosary Church.
