Robert (Bob) Paul Girard James was born on a winter day in Vermont on January 21, 1927 and passed peacefully at the age of 94 on October 21, 2021 with his wife by his side. At the age of 16 he left home to roll logs at the local veneer mill. At 17 he joined the Merchant Marines and became a radio officer during WWII. He served on both the Atlantic and Pacific fronts and was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard for his WWII service. He moved to Georgia, earned a teaching credential, and taught shop at Avondale High School for three years where he was selected by students as teacher of the year. He was working on a graduate physics degree at Emory University when a recruiter from Los Angeles City College visited the University, met Bob, and invited him to teach at LACC. He earned his master’s degree in physics from UCLA. A Grossmont College professor emeritus of physics, he taught from 1963 to 1996, chaired the department several years, and established a physics scholarship. For decades he was a respected Sierra Club outings leader who enjoyed taking people on trips and teaching them how to backpack, camp, use a compass, ski, canoe, snorkel, and more. He enjoyed sitting around a campfire with friends and family playing the harmonica and singing. He was a long-time member of the Mission Bay Yacht Club, but after retirement he also loved sailing on cruise ships with his wife of 34 years, Helen Foster James. He frequently could be found wearing one of his favorite Hawaiian aloha shirts, a ball cap, and sunglasses. He is survived by his wife Helen, his daughter Beckie Whitby and her husband Pete, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Jennifer (Jenny) Lynn and his six siblings. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him felt fortunate to enjoy his intelligence, sense of humor, and kindness. He lived life well and will be so missed.
A small family memorial will be held in the spring of 2022 and tributes in honor of this beloved man are being arranged.
