Mr. Richard “Dick” Bates passed away on February 20th, 2021 in Fontana, California. He was 86 years old. Dick was born in Warwick, Rhode Island. He was the eldest of three boys to Walter and Marjorie Bates. He attended Boston University. Dick was a member of the United States Army. He served in the Korean War.
Dick was an athlete. He played football and track and field, excelling at shot put and discus, at Boston University. He was a member of the U.S. Track Field team and medaled at Asian games in Japan. He received a few offers to play professional football. He decided to accept a position in a management program with Bethlehem Steel. He continued in sales within the steel industry for his entire business career.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margret “Peg” Marsh Bates. He is survived by his children, brothers and grandchildren, Kathy Bates-Polster (husband Adam Polster) and Michael Bates (wife Lynne Bates), Norman Bates, Robert Bates, Mariah Polster, Claire Maldonado, Jordan Drumheller, Devin Davenport and Madison Davenport. He was preceded in death by his son Richard Bates Jr.
Due to Covid restrictions, funeral services will be conducted virtually on March 23 at 11:45 a.m. pacific time. The funeral service will be held by El Camino Memorial-Sorrento Valley.
