Margaret Mary Nickell nee Harrold, 75, passed away at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15th, at Scripps Mercy Hospital of cardiovascular complications following lung surgery. Peggy was born on July 6, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, the second child of Helen Ann Harrold nee McNamara and Daniel Francis Harrold, and spent most of her childhood in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. She attended St. Mary's Parish Elementary School in Pawtucket and Bayview Academy in Cranston, Rhode Island, eventually graduating with a teaching degree from Salve Regina College (now University) in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1958. She taught in the Pawtucket elementary school system for four years before moving to Berkeley, California, where she continued to teach in the Irvington District of the Fremont School System until 1966. During this period, she received a lifetime teaching credential from the State of California.
Peggy married Robert Nickell, then a graduate student in the College of Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, on July 18, 1964, in Pawtucket, and was the mother of two children, Steven Dana Nickell of Lemon Grove and Kristen Elena Armstrong nee Nickell of San Diego. She is survived by a sister, Deborah Harrold of Pawtucket, and three brothers, Paul Harrold of Orlando, Florida; David Harrold of Pawtucket; and Peter Harrold of Jupiter, Florida; in addition to her husband, her two children, and a grand-daughter.
A rosary service celebrating her life will be held at the Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary, 3655 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 21st, with a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd, at the St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Mission Hills, followed by interment at the Miramar National Cemetary.
