Larry was born in St. Clair, Michigan to parents Monroe Richard and Ruth E. (Bowlby) Carleton. He lived in that area until attending Michigan State University. He graduated with his B.S. in mathematics and then spent time teaching in the Peace Corps in Swaziland. After returning from Africa, he received his M.A. in philosophy from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota, where he met his future wife Lynne. Larry and Lynne were married in La Mesa, California and lived together in San Diego for 45 years. Their son William was born in 1993. After moving to San Diego, Larry did postdoctoral research in cognitive science at UCSD and then taught philosophy at the University of San Diego, San Diego State University, and Cal State Northridge. While teaching, Larry himself returned to school. After completing his M.S. in computer science, he began a long career as a software engineer, retiring in 2016. Larry enjoyed hiking, writing short stories, and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband and father and will be missed greatly. He is survived by his wife Lynne Fisher Carleton, son William Lawrence Carleton, and brothers Gordon Carleton (wife Lori Chapek-Carleton) and Douglas Carleton.
