Joseph Peter Limer

Joseph Peter Limer, age 49, of San Marcos, California passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, September 2, 2023. He was born on September 19, 1973 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the son of Joseph Lutap and Leonila Limer.

He is survived by his sister, Cyndee Cayton and her husband Aaron, nephew Trevor Cayton, and niece Torrie Cayton from West Virginia; his grandfather, Frank Lutap; many aunts, uncles, and cousins from Arizona, California, Canada, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington.

Joe graduated from WVU Law School in 2000. He moved to San Diego a few months later, where he began his work as a Professor of Political Science and also taught law classes for the business department at Palomar College. He was the winner of the Distinguished Faculty Award, which is a lifetime achievement teaching award. Joe was active in the APAHE, the Asian Pacific Alliance in Higher Education. Joe received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, where he did academic research and a paper on the commerce clause of The Constitution. He was a teacher and renowned slam poet, having been a part of the San Diego Slam Team for several years. Joe was published as part of the San Diego Poetry SLAM Team Chapbook of 2018. He was the cofounder of the Glassless Minds Open Mic and Poetry Writing Workshop hosted at Mira Costa College. He won numerous poetry awards and also held poetry workshops.

He loved to challenge people, especially his students and make them think for themselves. He was passionate about bringing out the best in others, whether through his work as a professor or through his mentorship and guidance in the poetry community. He enjoyed sports and going to sport venues. Joe loved spending time with his family.

A visitation for Joseph will be held Monday, September 11, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121, followed by a funeral service from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palomar College Foundation, Asian Pacific Islander Alliance in Higher Education of which Joe was an active participant. Memorial contributions may be made online by selecting Asian Pacific Islander Alliance in Higher Education fund; or by mailing a check to the Palomar College Foundation, 1140 W Mission Road, San Marcos, CA 92069
