Eldridge Paul “Pete” Engstrom, 86, passed away on April 19, 2024 in San Diego, California. He was born on May 5,1937 in Veedersburg, Indiana to Paul and Gretchen Engstrom. He was preceded in death by Toyoko, his loving wife of 55 years.
Pete proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years and retired as Command Master Chief at Lemoore Naval Air Station in August 1985. He lived in Hanford, California for nearly 35 years. Following his retirement from the Navy, Pete worked as a drug and alcohol treatment counselor for Kings View Community Services in Hanford, and then as a volunteer at NAS Lemoore, advising other Navy retirees on their veteran’s benefits. He moved to San Diego, California for the last five years of his life to be closer to family.
Pete is survived by his children JoAnn Olson of San Diego and Daren (David) Engstrom of Tehachapi, California, his brother Jon Engstrom of Los Angeles, California and his grandson Matthew Banez-Olson of Pleasant Hill, California. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Gretchen of Dinuba, California, his sister Beverly Reed of Fresno, California and his brother Lynn Engstrom of San Pedro, California.
A private memorial service will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on May 17, 2024 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s San Diego in memory of Eldridge “Pete” Engstrom.
