Doug was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 7, 1941 the son of Dwight J. Fritz, MD and Beulah A. (Wingate) Fritz. He was a graduate of Oakwood High School in 1959. Throughout high school he was active in music, both vocal and instrumental. He was the band captain during his Junior and Senior years. He also was a member of the Dayton Junior Philharmonic Orchestra. He attended Ohio State University where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and then the University of Dayton where he received a BA in Sociology in 1964. Following graduation from U of D he attended Law School at the University of Cincinnati.
In his business career, Doug worked for the Kemper Insurance Group at various locations: Chicago IL, Long Grove IL, Summit NJ, Menlo Park CA and San Francisco in both Human Resources and Field Systems. He was responsible for converting all Human Resource records to an on-line system. He was a member of the Junior Board at Kemper, a member of Toastmasters, and an advisor for Junior Achievement in Chicago. He retired in 1996 after 29 years with Kemper.
In 2005 he moved to San Diego from San Francisco where he had lived for 25 years.
Doug is survived by two first cousins; Joseph E. Biggs and George E. Biggs both of Grove City, OH and their families as well as three distant cousins; Langley B. James of Great Falls, VA; Dr. C. Rodney James of Fredericktown, OH and Elaine Tappan of Overland Park, KS. In addition, he is survived by many friends in the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous of which he was a grateful member for over 17 years.
Services will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 625 Pennsylvania Avenue San Diego CA 92103, on Saturday January 12, 2013 at 1 pm. Arrangements are being handled by Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary (619) 295-2177.
