Yolanda was born to Andres and Anita Porter, Jr. in San Antonio, Texas on June 23, 1939. In high school, at the age of 15, she met the love of her life, Feliciano (Felix) Salazar Jr. They married at 17 years old before Felix joined the Army. During that time, their family grew, and they traveled the world, living in Frankfurt, Germany, Alaska, Virginia, and El Paso. Whenever possible, the family travelled by car to the next place Felix would be stationed. This gave them the opportunity to see much of the United States. Being a military spouse, Yolanda became an expert packer. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, and gardening. Her daughter, Sandra, often posed as Yolanda’s mannequin and she, placed her own distinctive touch on the clothing she sewed with labels that said, “Made with love, by Mom.” As someone who always managed to be crafty, while living in Alaska she created a turkey platter while taking a pottery class that later became a Thanksgiving family tradition. She also eventually earned her cosmetology license and began running her own salon called Yolie’s Beauty Salon. She was very loving and caring not only with her family, but with all people. For her clients that could no longer visit the salon, she would go directly to their homes to pamper them by doing their hair and nails. Often when she cooked, she cooked from her heart while Felix followed the recipe. The result led to she and her husband becoming a dynamic duo in the kitchen. Tamales were one of their specialties and her daughter, granddaughter & great grandchildren plan to carry on this special Salazar family tradition.
Yolanda is survived by her daughter, Sandra Salazar, and her son, Daniel Salazar; her granddaughter Ashley Garza; and great granddaughters, Makayla, Cheyenne, and Violet. She will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind.
A visitation for Yolanda will be held March 31, 2022, at Sunset Funeral Home from 6-9PM, with a Rosary at 7PM. Funeral services will take place the following day, April 1, 2022, also at Sunset Funeral Home at 12PM. A committal service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will follow directly after services.
In honor of Yolanda, we ask that everyone attending please wear purple.
