Thomas was born on August 10, 1941 in San Antonio, Texas and became a devout Catholic at an early age. He graduated from Central Catholic High School when he was just 15 years old and briefly attended St. Mary’s University before enrolling at Prairie View A&M University where he majored in Industrial Engineering and joined the Reserve Officer Training Corp program. He successfully completed the Engineering Program in 1962 earning “Distinguished Military Graduate” status and receiving his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States “Regular” Army.
During his career in the military, he served his country at home and abroad including tours of duty in Germany, Vietnam, Korea and Thailand. When the time for a new transition came, he concluded his military career as a Major in the U.S. Army Signal Corps but continued to serve his country as a Compliance Officer with the United States Department of Labor.
Thomas was a man of education, with this came the yearning to teach and mentor others. He understood that children were our future. So, after more than 25 years of Government Service he took a position at Sam Houston High School where he taught History and championed the afterschool boy’s & girl’s golf program for the remainder of his career.
More than a man of Service and Education, he was foremost a man of God. Reciting The Lord's Prayer before bed every night and making time to pray the Rosary throughout the day. He attended Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church and gave time to his Lord. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., an avid golfer, he enjoyed travel, sought to make connections with everyone he met, was a loyal companion to his many pets and he loved to tell a good joke.
Thomas’s memory will forever live in his loving wife Sylvia M. Jones; in his 3 children from a previous marriage Resharn Yvette Jones, Thomas M Jones Jr. (Jacqulin), and Sharon Lynette Moton (Shaun); in his 6 grandchildren; in his 3 great grandchildren; and in his numerous extended family members and friends.
