Susan Murphy Wood of San Antonio entered into rest on May 4, 2012. She was born in Austin on March 6, 1946 to Patsy and William Wood being the first baby born there to a returning World War II veteran. Preceded in death by her mother, Patsy Murphy Wood, she is survived by Gerry Saum, her father William H. Wood and wife Beverly; sister, Judy Dalrymple and husband Scott; sister Sally Keedy and husband Bill; nephews, Scott Dalrymple and wife Mary, Shaun Dalrymple and wife Dawn, Kevin Dalrymple and wife Katie, John Keedy; niece, Elizabeth Bartolomei and husband E.J.; great nephews, Ian and Adam Dalrymple. She attended Ridgeview Elementary in NEISD where she would later serve as Principal. She also attended Alamo Heights schools and graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1964. After graduating from TCU in 1968, she taught 3 years in Denver. She returned to San Antonio in 1974 and taught at Walzem, Montgomery and Northwood in NEISD. She earned a Masters of Administration in Education at Trinity University in 1976 and served as Principal at Northwood from 1984 to 2000. After 3 years at Oaks Meadow, the former student went back to Ridgeview as Principal in 2002, retiring in 2010. Susan received many awards as an educator including Teacher of the Year, Human Relations of the Year, Texas PTA State Life Member, PTA National Life Member, Northeast Spotlighter, and Superintendent Awards. She was a member of Chi Omega at TCU and served as President of Beta Tau honorary educational sorority, she was also a member of TEPSA. During her years as an educator, she served on many committees and served as a mentor teacher and Principal to many new students.
Susan expressed thanks to her wonderful caregivers Dr. Elias Lorenzana, and staff, Dr. Bruce Thompson, Dr. James Wilder and staff, Dr. Simmons; all nurses and staff at North Central Baptist Hospital and hospice nurse Kay Richter.
Susan Wood was a once in a lifetime companion, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, mentor, and educator. She was gentle, kind, loving, and fair to everyone. Above all she was a peacemaker and caretaker to everyone, especially children. Her impact on those she touched with her educational skills will be felt for generation by her students, other teachers and Principals. Susan served her community with great dedication. However, she also liked to just have fun. Whether at her house at Lake LBJ known as Escape Estate, with her dinner club, friends, her great groups of teachers and Principals, on one of her many travels, with her family, or just at home Susan was eager and willing to enjoy life and those around her putting everyone at ease always. Susan was comfortable at a Spurs game, or a symphony. She cherished everyone and always remembered everything about each person. Susan will be deeply missed and never forgotten. “Rest in Peace My Sweet”
Pallbearers will be Scotty Dalrymple, Shaun Dalrymple, Kevin Dalrymple, Elizabeth Bartolomei, John Keedy, Ricky Harris and Kenny Harris
The Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at 4:00 P.M., Friday, May 11, 2012 at Alamo Heights Methodist Church, 825 E. Basse Road , San Antonio , Texas . There will be private interment at Sunset Memorial Park.
