His legend will always live on. Steve's party in Heaven started January 8, 2017 with his victory over a nine year battle with Dementia/Alzheimer's surrounded by family at Dignity Care Home, San Antonio, Texas.
Steven George Forsythe was born October 15, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elinor Forsythe. Steve is survived by wife, Jill (Levandowski) and children: Matthew, Mooresville, NC; Jenne Cook (Mark), San Antonio, TX; Kimberly, Cottonwood, CA; grandchildren: Camden, Carter and Colton Cook; sister, Nancy Mansfield (Bob), Denver, CO; nephew, Jon Goebel and niece, Laura Catalina; as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
In 1967, Steve graduated from Grosse Pointe High School. He received his B.S. in Economics at Western Michigan in June, 1971. He earned a Master of Arts, Mathematics, from the University of Michigan, May, 1973, and was a huge UofM fan. Go Blue!
Steve had a passion for teaching and from 1975-1983 held a position as Instructor and Head of the Computer Department at St. Clair County Community College, Port Huron, Michigan. While at SC4, Steve was the Student Advisor for the Office Education Association.
In 1983, Steve moved his family to Brea, California to join the Shelly/Cashman writing team, where he became an integral part of all Shelly/Cashman educational activities, including computer programming, application software (WordPerfect) and the Windows operating system. Steve was the inspirational leader of the Shelly/Cashman efforts regarding teaching training, including handling both academic and social activities at all of the Shelly/Cashman Institutes. He inspired many, and made friends across the country. He was a one-of-a-kind who will be missed by all who knew and interacted with him.
Steve continued his love of teaching at Fullerton Community College where he taught Information Systems classes from 1987 - 1992. In later years, he taught part-time at Rio Hondo College.
July 1988, Steve opened Brookside Publishing Company and produced operating system (Microsoft DOS and Microsoft Windows) and word processing (WordPerfect) textbooks. Brookside Publishing Company sold textbooks nationwide to high schools, colleges and universities. July 1993, Brookside was purchased by Course Technology and Steve resumed writing with the Shelly/Cashman team.
There was no such thing as a bad day when he was around. He was a loving husband, an amazing father, Papa, brother, uncle, author, teacher, coach and friend. Steve will be remembered by Jimmy Buffett music and Parrothead parties. His kids will remember him floating around the pool and his cannonballs. His friends will remember the beach bonfires, GoofBall Rallies, beer making, wine tasting trips and many backyard parties.
Steve will be remembered by those he met along the way to his long goodbye by his smile. When asked at a support group gathering to say something about himself he cheerfully responded, "I choose to be happy." Hail to the Victor!
