Daughter of Elwood and Myrtle, she was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut just months before the 1929 stock market crash…the lessons of which were deeply impressed upon her life throughout her upbringing; work hard, live frugally, maintain a positive attitude, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Sally had a long, full, and interesting life.
She was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota in her early years before moving with her family to Houston, Texas near the end of WWII. She attended Reagan High School in Houston, Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts, and finally The University of Houston.
She worked several years as a manager for The Prudential Company in Houston before settling on a career as a teacher at Garden Oaks Elementary School in Houston retiring after 27 years of service.
During the late 1960s she became enthralled with the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country which led to her purchase of land there. She spent the next 50 years with her brother and his children clearing land, maintaining roads, building structures, drilling wells, and shooting the occasional rattlesnake under her deck. A New Englander turned “country girl” she would say.
Sally loved animals, mystery novels, travel, crossword puzzles, sports cars, reading, classical music, scotch, and the Texas Hill Country…though not necessarily in that order. She remained sharp, active, engaged, curious, and retained a great sense of humor through her final days.
Fiercely independent, she never married. Sally Ann was both the anchor and safe harbor to the Merwin family.
Predeceased by her parents, younger brother John, and many much beloved pets. She is survived by her adoring nephews, their families, and her last and “very best” dog Steffi.
