Rick Gutierrez passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 61 in San Antonio, Texas on Monday, February 12, 2024. He was born December 13, 1962 as Ricardo Israel Gutierrez to Piedad Gutierrez and Celsa Garcia Gutierrez in Torrance, California.
He is preceded in death by his father Piedad Gutierrez and siblings Bertha Gutierrez and Frank Gutierrez and brother-in-law Brian Zachary. Rick was the youngest of twelve children.
He is survived by his wife Lourdes Gutierrez, and children Ricky Israel Gutierrez, Jr., Sharon (Adam) Bernal, Bethany Gutierrez, Christina Gutierrez; grandson, Adam Bernal, Jr.; his mother Celsa Gutierrez, siblings Pete Gutierrez, Rosalie Carroll, Jane Zachary, Teresa (Tony) Mercado, Art (April) Gutierrez, Albert Gutierrez, Roger Gutierrez, Javier Gutierrez, and Jesse Gutierrez.
Rick grew up in southern California and lived on the Central Coast prior to moving to Texas in 2001. He was a nature enthusiast and loved to read on various subjects including geography, history and ancient cultures, wildlife, and his favorite topic - birding. He loved taking long walks and journaled bird sightings on his many hikes and trips to parks and wildlife preserves. Another one of Rick’s hobbies was playing riffs and cover songs on his guitar in his spare time. By occupation Rick was in sales and consistently ranked among top producers during his lengthy career which included furniture sales and most recently bath remodeling.
In his earlier years, Rick had the privilege of serving in short-term missionary trips and enjoyed sharing the gospel with others. Rick and Lourdes met during an outreach at a Calvary Chapel in Southern California and were married in 1987. In recent years, Rick and Lourdes had the opportunity to see more and travel. And in 2022, they had the joy of welcoming their first grandchild, Adam Bernal, Jr. Rick and Lourdes loved hosting family gatherings, especially during holidays, where Rick could usually be found making coffee for everyone.
He will be remembered for his enthusiasm, ability to engage with others, intelligent conversations, strong family values and faith in Jesus. Rick was loved and will be greatly missed.
A visitation for Rick will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, TX 78238. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, TX 78238. A committal service will occur Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 2:15 PM to 2:45 PM at External Service Location, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218.
