Mr. Venegas, aka Grandpa and later GreatGrandpa are names I was honored to use for him.  I had so much love and respect for him.  He honored and loved my mother in law with all his heart.  I see the goodness from him continuing in his children.  Memories.  Ok. right off the top of my head, he showed me how to brew tea that tastes better than Bill Millers.   Secret to making Spanish Rice,   you have  to make sure it is all toasted brown before adding all other ingredients.  LOve you and miss you Mr. Venegas

Refugio "Cuco" Venegas Who I Met In 1959.. He Never Changed From The Day I Met Him.. Alway Kind, Generous And Understanding.. He and Chita Always Made Us Feel At Home Whenever We Visited From California.. Always Enjoyed A Beer With Him And Talked About What Else .. The Good Old Days .. We Had A Lot In Common About Familia And The Hard Work It Took To Get To Where We Were.. Have A Great Journey My Friend..

So very sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I used to see him out collecting his morning paper, and he ALWAYS had a smile and a wave!  My dad so enjoyed visiting with him and your mom through the years!!! They were such wonderful neighbors!!! Thinking of you all.....


I would like to give Joey and the Venegas family my deepest sympathy. Before working with Joey in the SAFD, I worked with Refugio in the machine shop at East Kelly on Quintana Rd. He was the best machinist we had. Only one that was allowed to work on the main shaft of the C-5 engine. Any mistakes would have been costly. Never happened with Refugio there. Very impressed with your father’s ability. This is why I still remember his ability, this many years ago (1972).

I remember when I danced the dollar dance at Ditto’s and my wedding. He told me that he had been married for 25 years to Tia Chita , but it still felt like the first day. When I told Tia Chita what Tio Cuco had told me, she asked me if he was drunk. I told her I couldn’t tell if he was or not. 

My Padrino Cuco was an ever present experience in my life as a child. He and my Madrina Pauline, his beloved wife, remained a constant presence throughout my whole childhood. My parents always told me that if anything ever happened to them, that my Padrinos, Cuco and Chita, would take care of me. This created such a powerful sense of security for a necia tumblelina like me.  Padrino and his devotion to my madrina and his family always created such a powerful sense of stability, reverence for familia and definitely a solid sense of belonging and being loved. What more could a kid ask for from her second set of parents. What a kind, loving, gentle, spirit my Padrino was always. A patriot who loved and served his country to freely love and be devoted as a son, brother, husband, father and Padrino. He gave it all for those blessed to be a part of his circle. He tended to all of us well and never questioned his role. His spirit lives on in all of us fortunate enough to have been loved by him. Refugio "Cuco" Venegas, iPRESENTE!

He is survived by his sons, Joey Venegas (Solia), David Venegas (Vivian); daughter, Margaret J. Venegas; four grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren as well as numerous family and friends. Refugio will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.




He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Pauline Z. Venegas; parents, Francisco Venegas and Marcelina Moncevais; siblings, Juanita Venegas, Sara Venegas, Juan Venegas and Jose Venegas; half siblings, Virginia Venegas, Frank Venegas Jr. and Josefa Julia Venegas.
