Our beautiful mother, Rebecca Cantu Guzman, went to be with our Lord in heaven and joined her dear husband on June 19, 2016. She was born on September 13, 1927, and was preceded in death by her parents, Willie S. Cantu and Frances Pacheco Cantu; her only husband Ruben Guzman whom she was married to for 62 years; and her brother Alfred P. Cantu. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca J. Shires (Graham) and Janis Ann Guzman and grandson Christian DeLeon of Houston, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a graduate from Brackenridge High School in 1947 while working at Kress dollar store after school to support her disabled mother and younger brother. She also worked for many years as a sales clerk at other department stores i.e.: Wolfe & Marx, Frost Bros., and Margo’s La Mode until they closed for business. She learned a lot about the latest fashion and dressed in style for her jobs. She loved working while also raising her daughters so she entered the medical field at the Baptist Hospital as a housekeeping nurse attendant for a short time until she became ill and had to retire. She loved God, read and studied the Bible, was a loving faithful wife, mother and daughter. Her many hobbies that she enjoyed were sewing, baking, cooking, and loved to decorate her home since she became very creative with arts and crafts. She volunteered her talents working with children at her oldest daughter’s schools where Joanie taught kindergarten at Sarah King Elementary, Graebner Elementary, and Woodlawn Elementary before she suffered a stroke in 2003. She was also a long time member of La Trinidad Methodist Church, for which she sang in the choir especially during the Christmas cantata of “Handel’s Messiah” and volunteered in the kitchen with fundraisers making her delicious enchilada plates, rice and beans, baked best German chocolate cake for the 4th of July picnic and served holiday meals. She later became a member of Galvan Revivals church. She was always very religious and very conservative with high morals which she role modeled for and to her family and also very patriotic. Our mother was also proud of her family history and ancestry, being a great-granddaughter of the pioneer DeLaGarza family who were settlers from Spain and became ranchers and farmers in and around Wilson county, Toby, TX, Antascosa County including Jordantan and Floresville. She was also a relative of one of the “Heroes of the Alamo,” Alejandro DelaGarza, as well as her late mother’s the Pacheco family who were early settlers at the San Jose Missions for which she was proud of being a descendent living in this great state of Texas, of hard workers and producers who never owned slaves. We thank the administrators, nursing staff and doctors at Legend Oakes West for their care and friends she made while she lived there. We will always love you Mama and miss your beautiful bright smile very much. Rest in peace with our Lord Jesus and daddy Ruben. The family will be receiving guests at the Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers funeral home on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer service.
