Tricia died July 13, 2012, of breast cancer after an intense campaign to fight the disease. Her love for her children fueled her efforts as she endured 49 separate chemotherapy treatments, 33 rounds of radiation, and 19 different chemotherapy drugs. She never wavered in her commitment to family, rallying for yet another dose if it meant more time with her family. She was an especially fierce advocate for her special needs son Tommy, even as she underwent round after round of chemotherapy.
Patricia was born on November 5, 1960, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Rosemary (Power) Hines and Richard Hines. She graduated from St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in December 1983, majoring in textiles and clothing with a minor in history. She worked as a better sportswear buyer for the Von Maur Department Store in Davenport, Iowa, after college.
She was united in marriage to Dana G. Nitschke on June 21, 1986, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport, Iowa. Her family dubbed this event “The Royal Wedding.”
Patricia chose to forego her career in order to stay at home when she and Dana started a family. She was devoted to her children, especially dedicated to her special needs son, Tommy, who brought her much joy and laughter, as did Molly, Rachel, and Ryan. Not to be outdone by any of them, she reveled in the limelight, always determined to be the funniest and craziest person at the party and the best mom ever.
