Michael M. McCarley (Mike) passed from life through death and into eternity on Friday, the 30th of September. He is now absent from the body and face to face with the Lord Jesus Christ. Mike was born on November 9, 1941 in San Antonio to Jesse Raymond McCarley and Dorothy Walford McCarley. He was the beloved husband of Sharon Koehl McCarley, the devoted father of Andrea McCarley Custer, and the loving brother of Lynne McCarley Priest.
He is survived by his wife Sharon Koehl McCarley, daughter Andrea McCarley Custer and her husband Scott, his grandsons Caleb and Austin Custer, and sister Lynne McCarley Priest and her husband Bill, and niece Elisa Priest. Other close surviving family members are his brother-in-law Gary L. Koehl and wife Virginia, nephews Joseph and Daniel Koehl and his wife Lindsey Koehl.
Mike graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1959. He graduated from Trinity University and was the Senior Class President in 1963. After being Corps Commander of ROTC, he proudly served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant and was awarded The Army Commendation Medal in 1966. On July 22, 1967, Mike married the love of his life. He and Sharon spent 55 beautiful married years together. Following his military service, he worked tirelessly for Business Equipment & Systems Co. and subsequently became the owner. He loved attending family functions, having lunch with his daughter, enjoying his grandsons’ school and sports events, and simply playing catch in the backyard. Mike was a life-long Spurs fan and often went to the games.
Mike was devoted to the consistent intake of the Word of God. He was one of the founding members of the Alamo City Bible Church where he served as Chairman of the Board for many years. Mike made his transfer from time to eternity in God’s provision of dying grace and with the firm understanding that “for me, living is Christ, dying is profit” (Philippians 1:21) for Jesus proclaimed, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me shall live even if he dies” (John 11:25). The apostle Paul wrote a eulogy for his faithful servant in II Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”
The Memorial service will be at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 11th of October, at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio. The Reverend R. B. Thieme III will be officiating.
