Mary Elaine (nee, McOwen) Sweeney, was born 6 August 1925, in New Rochelle, New York to Joseph Augustine, and Josephine V. (nee: Corcoran) McOwen on August 6, 1925. Mary entered the Kingdom of God on November 17 2021 – to be reunited with her loving husband of 71 years [Married 19 February 1955], Thomas Joseph Sweeney, who preceded her is passing on Christmas day 2008, and all of her sibling; brother, Joseph McOwen, sister Patricia Heine, and brother George McOwen.
Mary graduated from College of New Rochelle, New York. (1943-1947) with a degree in chemistry, and worked as a lab assistant at what is today known as the memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Mary began her teaching career in 1950 in New York. On 19 February 1955 she married Tom Sweeney. She later moved to St. Louis, and then to Texas where she revived her teaching career, but teaching those with learning disabilities. At that time there was no program for the learning disabled, but LBJ was spending money in that area, and Mary was on of the pioneers for what is today a very productive endeavor.
Mary has spent the last years living in the Windemere at Westover Hills. She loved all of the staff at the Windemere where she received excellent care.
Visitation will be at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 6907 Kitchener Road San Antonio, Texas 78240 on Monday, January 3, 2022 beginning at 8:30am with a funeral rosary at 9:00 am to follow with a funeral mass at 9:30am and burial to at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
