Marjorie Henderson

Growing up in East Texas, she and her siblings had a very difficult life after losing their mother when Marjorie was only 8 years old.

Marjorie was a great lover of animals. She always had a rescued dog and/or cat that she cared for and loved like a child. She had many conversations about all the animals that would be greeting her in heaven. She would laugh about how they would all be jumping on her and letting her know they had been waiting.

A resourceful woman with simple tastes, she began an alteration business serving a multitude of clients. Some of her favorites were Vernon Police Officers. There was always another patch to sew on a coat or uniform. She would get such a kick out of her dog, Cricket, greeting each one of them while sitting up to beg for attention.

She met her husband, Leon, while she was working at the Plaza Theater taking tickets. He was attracted to her long, wavy, black hair and dark brown eyes. She told stories about how he would wait around until closing to help her clean. They were married in 1946. He preceded her in death in 2000.

She and her siblings totaled 8 and grew up during the difficult depression. All of them were not strangers to a cotton field and hard work pulling bolls. She never shied away from hard work.

Possessing a green thumb, she loved plants and always had beautiful roses outside that were admired by passerby’s asking to take pictures with them as a background.

She is survived by a sister, Wanda Greening, a daughter, Inez Branscum and husband Randal, daughter Linda Heard and husband Walter and son, Tommy Henderson and wife Joya. Also surviving are 6 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren.

What a glorious reunion in Heaven it must have been as she was met by her mother, Leon, all her brothers, her first Grandson, Cary Nichols and her son-in-law Tommy Nichols.

She has resided at Parklane Tower Care Home in San Antonio for the past 6 years. When it became difficult to remember her favorite people’s names, she gave them nicknames like Grasshopper, Sweetie Pie and the giver and receiver of a daily hug, Sunshine. She will forever be missed by her family and friends that loved her dearly but know they will see each other again.

A private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite animal rescue in her name. Saving a homeless animal in her honor is the best way of expressing your condolences.
