Marie Szilagyi Campbell died peacefully August 6, 2015. Born July 7, 1926, in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, to Ragnhild Dalsgaard Szilagyi and Col. Nicholas Szilagyi, she was an Army brat whose young adventures ranged from flying fish as her "pets" in Hawaii to summers in Maine. Marie graduated from Highland Park HS in Dallas and received her BA from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO. She was introduced to Roy Robert Campbell, Jr. on a blind date in February of 1952. Three months later, they were married, and Roy III, Elizabeth Anne, Nick, and Will followed soon thereafter.
Marie was the consummate beautiful, supportive, intelligent wife and mother. She was as comfortable correcting grammar or setting a lovely table as she was dealing with yet another bloody foot, cracked head, or eye injury. She and Roy were referred to as "Ozzie and Harriet" by their children's friends for the loving, dependable home they created. Her children cherish the lifelong friendships and happy memories of growing up on Kennedy Avenue and annual summer vacations to Port Aransas and Ft. Clark.
While Marie and Roy enjoyed traveling in later years, one could usually tell the day of the week by their routine, culminating in dinner at La Fonda on Sundays. Marie played bridge every Tuesday at the San Antonio Country Club for nearly 50 years and enjoyed her monthly investment club. Prior to her many back and hip surgeries, she and Roy walked every morning, stopping to speak to each dog she encountered, and she played golf with family and friends at the club most weekends. Marie was also very, very proud of her eight grandchildren and loved following their sports and encouraging their endeavors.
At Laurel Heights UMC, Marie served in many capacities. She and Roy drew much strength from their Epworth Sunday School class and Emmaus reunion group. Their steadfast faith in God saw the extended Campbell family through many a tough time. Marie volunteered at Methodist Hospital, serving as president of the Bluebirds, and was a sustaining member of the Junior League and Battle of Flowers Association. She was a classic beauty to the end, and her grace and elegance will be missed by all.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; grandson John Charles Yerxa; by her husband of 57 years, Roy R. Campbell, Jr.; her son, Roy R. Campbell, III; and her sister, Elisabeth Szilagyi Easton. Marie is survived by daughter Elizabeth Campbell Yerxa (Charles); son Nicholas Paul Campbell (Genny); son William Cyrus Campbell (Stacy); grandchildren Abigail Yerxa Myrick (Tommy), Wilson and Cyrus Yerxa; Paul and Luke Campbell; Christian and Clay Campbell; daughter-in-law Debbie Reiners Campbell; brother-in-law Robert L. Easton, and numerous loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank and acknowledge the exceptionally loving, professional staff at Colonial Gardens Memory Care Community, Caring Companions, and New Century Hospice.
