

Manuel M. Ortega, age 74, a Marine Corps veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023. He will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, and courageous warrior who embodied the spirit of the wolf, mirroring the values of the United States Marine Corps. Manuel’s life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his family, deep love for nature, and passion for camaraderie.
Born on August 31, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas, Manuel had an innate connection with the wolf, symbolizing strength, loyalty, and resilience. These qualities resonated deeply with his service in the Marine Corps, where he displayed absolute dedication to his fellow Marines and his country. Manuel demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness, exemplifying the true spirit of a Marine. He was awarded the Purple Heart, a symbol of his sacrifice and valor, for wounds sustained in combat. This prestigious decoration recognizes his resolute dedication to duty and the sacrifices he made for his fellow Marines and his nation.
Manuel’s love for the outdoors was evident in the many cherished memories his family created together. They enjoyed camping on the beach and fishing at Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas, their adventures filled with laughter and joy. Before their trips, the tradition of stopping at Wiatrek’s meat market in Poth, Texas, to get beef jerky became a beloved ritual, adding to the excitement and anticipation.
A man of many passions, Manuel embraced the thrill of the hunt, the tranquility of fishing, and the beauty of nature in all its forms. He immersed himself in these outdoor pursuits, finding solace and fulfillment in the great outdoors. Manuel’s love for nature extended to his affinity for animals. They were drawn to his gentle and caring spirit, forming strong connections. His loyal bull, Shag, followed him like a faithful companion, engaging in playful games of hide-and-seek. Manuel’s chicken, Reba, became his constant sidekick, welcoming him home from work every day by leading him up the driveway with a slow and deliberate pace, showcasing their unique bond.
Manuel’s vibrant personality and strong presence made him the center of attention. He had an outspoken nature that commanded respect from those around him. His expansive circle of friends was a testament to the genuine connections he formed throughout his life. Manuel’s passion for playing pool was evident in his membership with the APA pool league, where he, his wife and son, fellow “pool sharks,” along with close friends, formed a formidable team, triumphing in numerous tournaments.
Manuel was a proud member of VFW Post 76, the oldest post in Texas, where he found camaraderie and support among his fellow veterans. He cherished the moments spent in the company of family and friends, creating memories that would be treasured for a lifetime. Manuel’s inclusive nature made everyone feel welcome and valued, fostering a sense of belonging and unity. His infectious belly laugh and Cheshire cat smile brightened the lives of all who knew him. He never shied away from a challenge, always rising to the occasion with relentless determination. His commitment to taking care of his family knew no bounds, and he would do anything and everything to ensure their well-being and happiness.
In retirement, he reveled in the serenity and tranquility of the countryside, finding joy in observing nature while his canine companions and chickens roamed freely. Manuel and his wife “Babe” of 42 years found solace in spontaneous getaways to Kickapoo & Coushatta, creating cherished memories together.
Manuel M. Ortega’s legacy of strength, loyalty, and love will forever be etched in the hearts of his beloved family, friends, and all those whose’s lives he touched. His commitment to his country, fierce dedication to his loved ones, and profound connection with nature will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Concepcion Martinez; one daughter Catherine Navejar; two sisters, Dolores Garcia and Eufemia Miera; Brother-in-law, Frank Longoria; and Niece, April Longoria. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ortega; three sons, Manuel G. Ortega, Wesley [Danielle] Ortega, and Michael [Tondra] Haskell; six grandchildren, Veronica Saavedra, Alyssia Navejar, Kristen Ruiz, Sarah Navejar, Cameron Haskell, Kenzie Haskell; two sisters, Sepherina Romero, Irene Longoria, and one brother, Roy Garcia.
A visitation for Manuel will be held Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232. Following the visitation will be a graveside service from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter # 4, 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX 78234.
